Soccer Question #2 about the Game from a Newbie

Which Soccer players are allowed to remonstrate with the referee?

I thought it was only the Captain who could discuss matters at length.

Just watching now the English v Uruguay game and the intensity of the Uruguay players to give the ref an ear-full I reckon is wrong.

The last thread took off at a tangent, I was partly to blame, sorry about that.

Technically, you're right, it should only be the captain.

However, as you've seen, if a player is aggrieved with a decision he'll remonstrate with the ref whether he's the captain or not.

The authorities don't really do anything to stop it so this kind of thing just goes on.

Dave/David, I missed your 1st thread but it is not soccer, the game is called "football" any further questions you may wish to ask, if you use the word football instead of soccer you should get more replies.

What you seen tonight was nothing in terms of challenging a ref, he has the final decision but as long as you don't use profanities towards him he will bear it, however that could backfire later on.

Players have a right to contest his decisions within reason, his word is always final though.

Since we're on the subject, can you explain exactly why it is some sort of sin to call football, soccer? Our own code Australian Rules Football, aerial ping pong has more hands on than any I know, yet still gets the label.

In Canada and the States we have our own "football". "Soccer" is always soccer in NA and it will remain so as a 2nd tier sport. Too many ballerinas taking dives imho.

Throwball- thst is a good one. Quite apt. The feet are only there to propel one player adroitly into the others or downfield. Pain, broken bits and long term headaches result. maybe call our game " Painball".

.Question:- Any thoughts on how a Ref decides between a Penalty and a Yellow Card?

.Question:- Any thoughts on how a Ref decides between a Penalty and a Yellow Card?

He doesn't have to make that decision.

A foul in the box is a penalty.

The ref has to decide if the offence merits a card, that's all.

If you are talking about a yellow card for simulation, he has to decide if the player was fouled or faked it.

Mate, thanks for that.

My bad, wrong terminology.

If I could rephrase ...

Free kick for any foul.

Verbal warning, like: you do something like this again and I will show you yellow/red... mostly does the trick.

Yellow card for a player who intends to gain advantage through his irregular action.

Red card for gross violation of the rules or after the second yellow card.

Question:- Any thoughts on how a Ref decides between a Free Kick (only) and a Yellow Card?

You're still confused -- these are quite independent matters.

The first is about what happens next in the game (free kick, penalty); the second is about what sanction might be applied to an individual player (none, yellow card, red card)

Referees often award free-kicks without handing out yellow cards. A bad foul might also result in a yellow card for a player, a horrendous foul in a straight red card.

(example:

)

It is possible, though less likely, that a player will be given a yellow card without a free-kick being awarded against them (time-wasting, 'diving', and things that happen when the ball is out of play).

See here for a case where a player is given a red card while the ball is technically out of play

(

).

That was at a World Cup finals, too.

God, this thread is painful.

Maybe Scarfie should explain the offside rule to Dafyd, who sounds more and more like 'the only gay in the village'. wink.png

That should shut him up. biggrin.png

Come on,

Dave is Australian; my questions about cricket would be even more stupid...

David48,

i'm posting as a football fan but would suggest you take a look at rugby especially Super Rugby on True channel 669 and you'll see discipline.

The players rarely challenge the ref who will only deal with the team captains and if a player is spoken to or disciplined it's through his captain.

It works and it's good to see how the players respond. Any dissent to being ' sin binned ' is usually a curse to themselves as they walk off the field, saying it to the ref could incur a more serious penalty.

Its part of the game im afraid. Its very simply tied into the popularity of the sport. Many challenges have been deemed dangerous that many years ago were healthy tussles, (go look up some classic Leeds Utd games from the 70s or just watch Pele kicked off the park in 1966). As the game became more gentrified, attackers were afforded greater protection which makes it that much easier to simulate a foul. To many of my generation (im not even that old - im Beckhams generation), its comical to see the protection players on the ball are afforded these days, but the upshot is that it leads invariably to more attack minded play which encourages neutral supporters to enjoy the game. I think many of us people kinda miss the more rugged and aggressive play style of the past, but if asked honestly, would probably argue the game seems more open and engaging now.

The downside is simulation. But this in itself is a bit of an art. Think of it as a part of the game like bluffing is in poker. Not only does it confer an advantage (which can be turned into cold hard cash at the end of the day with points, sponsorship, broadcasting rights and team success - its a business after all), but it also gets under the oppositions skin a bit and makes them lose composure once a few decisions start going against them. In addition, it also makes (less experienced) defenders panic a bit if theyre tasked with man marking a player thats world class in the art of shenanigans. Its all just part of the psychological aspect of the beautiful game. Its demoralizing if youre on the back foot and on top of it the referee is awarding soft decisions against you. And part of breaking down a team is finding a player like pepe, sticking someone that can be a bit of a <deleted> on him and poking at him until he explodes. If you dont think that was 100% part of the game plan of Germany, youd be massively naive. I mean how did Muller get him? By blatantly playing up a foul. Theres no way in hell the referee was coming to Muller's rescue, pepe just cleared the lines and was in control of the ball. At best it was a total accident and the game might have been stopped for the referee to tell him to either get up or get off the park, but in Pepe's head Muller was trying to get him a yellow card (and a defender on a yellow card is a less aggressive defender), and was clearly going to be pushing at him all game. So he lost his temper, stuck his head in a bit close and ended up sent off. Its a master class in winding up a defender. And as soon as you lose one of your back four, your team is in trouble. So its bad of course for 'sportsmanship', but its also part of the rich tapestry of the game. :) Its cheating, of course it is, but its also integral to the modern game, and any team that doesnt play it up a bit is disadvantaging their team.
