3g Networks And Phones In Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi has anyone got any up to date information on when 3g networks will be up and running in Thailand in the Pattaya area?

cheer :o s

3G is still a long time off in Bangkok, and the other provinces will be served even later!

The best we have at the moment in Pattaya is the Edge network (also called 2.75G, with speeds of up to 140 something kbps)...

Both Ais and Dtac have it on offer, but since my pda is only gprs and not edge, I don't have any first hand experience with it...

Funny enough, AIS does not offer edge in Bangkok, only Pattaya at the moment...

The only other data network I do have some experience with is the cdma system Hutch is using.

Speeds of up to 120-130kbps on a good day, but it seems very variable. Sometimes it's unnervingly slow, other times it's pretty fast and responsive...

So, can a 3G phone connect to Edge also (nokia 6630)? and does anyone have any idea of the coverage in Kho Samui.. Somebody mentioned spotty reception before, I was wondering if there has been any improvements........thanks. Seriously jonesing for adsl in the home, only one option, IPstar, and i don't think i want that service.

Monty, any practical experience with DTAC/EDGE vs. Hutch/CDMA? Of course I have ADSL at home but it's nice being able to access from the beach sometimes (of course it's a bitch to see the screen but that's another issue :)
