I have an all-white flying squirrel around my house. Leaps from one tree to another across wide distances. (Might be more than one, but I only ever see one at a time).

Despite many tries, not yet been able to capture him on film. Biut it always brightens my day when I see him.

A photo would be great as I cannot think of an all white Flying Squirrel in Thailand. The only white squirrel I am aware of is Variable Squirrel but that one doesn't glide.

Here is a picture of one the squirrels around our place.

They are wonderfully athletic but certainly can't "fly"

They are great to watch but not so much fun when they steal our mangoes!

Have a tree squirrel around in BKK but not white. Have only ever heard of grey or red, never mind Finlayson's.

But back to the OP. Yes, would love to hear Thais trying to pronounce it, better still, me trying to explain to them what I want them to say.

The bind moggles.

That is a Variable Squirrel you have there. They come in many colors, hence the name.

biggrin.png It's a lot easier to say "grarrog" - the Thai for "squirrel" - than it is to say "squirrel", even for me!

Here the Thai pronunciation:

Yes, you have to be quick! As soon as I hear the knocking noise they make, I'm out with the camera:

Hello All, from a farming viewpoint, "death to big tails", they do a lot of damage to

mangos and jackfruit in our yard, also have to net each fruit of my big Italian eggplants

as the take a few bites and move to another fruit. Every now and then the cats get one

but they seam to have no natural predator to keep them in check.

Monkeys are pretty good at stripping mango trees, too. There's a big tree at the top of Khao Toh-Sae. One day there were lots of small mangos growing; a few days later they had all been stripped off by the monkeys. They take a bite, realize it's too sharp and unripe, so throw it away. They then move on to the next one. Stupid monkeys!

How wonderful!! I didn't know they existed in different colours from grey or red. Learn something new every day.

I had a couple here in Switzerland, red ones, living in the trees outside my kitchen window. It was a joy to see them playing and jumping around whilst doing the dishes, me not them. Funny thing was seeing Jimmy the cat hugging a tree garfield like, embarrassed, after trying to catch them. Luckily they were too quick for him - birds and mice i could handle but what the hell do you do with a dead squirel?

They were there two years running and then just disappeared. And did not end up dead in my place. Perhaps they just moved on.

Mesmerising little things, they made me smile every day with their antics. I would throw stale bread out for them and they would grab the crusts and run up the tree.

Secret? I waved at them every morning when i made my coffee..... Good thing, got any guests i had doing the dishes too!!

Hey, Jetset, any news on the kitties?

Looks like him except he has a much longer and fluffier tail. And he definitely flies (well actually glides) long distances, from tree to tree or from electric pole to tree.
