England's dismal performances in the first two games of Group D has meant that Roy Hodgson's men are only playing for pride in the final group game.

It's been a tournament most of the players will want to quickly forget. This game against Costa Rica will Hodgson make several changes to his staring 11, with Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and Steven Gerrard all omitted from the starting 11.

Frank Lampard is set to come in and captain the side in what many pundits expect to be his final competitive game in an England shirt.

Whereas England's tournament has been a painful experience for players and fans alike, Costa Rica have arguably been one of the teams of the tournament so far, having already qualified for the knock out stages with a game to spare.

Costa Rica only need a point to win the group and are expected to rest key players such as Joel Campbell and Brian Ruiz for this one.

I'm English but i hope Costa Rica beat us by 3-4 or more goals today, its the only way that the FA will make any changes- if its a draw or narrow english win the FA will be saying "See! everything is ok, nothing to worry about, we dont need to change anything".

Quite possible the FA will say this whatever the outcome.

Hodgson certainly will.

Should be an interesting game from a football perspective though.

Is this ' Woy ' building for the future ?

I'm sure England's new manager will be grateful for all the new information.

I hope we get embarrassed by them.

England 0 v 3 Costa Rica.

I hope we don't.

This is the line-up and formation (442) we should have put in place for the Uruguay match. Putting the same team out after the Italy match was suicidal. Any monkey with half a brain could see that our two man midfield could and would be overrun. We had four players up-front that ran around like headless chickens to no effect, and a back four that leaked goals without the protection of any defensive midfielders.

We will win this match with ease, believe me.

Exactly. The attention span of the English football establishment is 90 minutes.

After the defeat to Italy, it was: "Well played, young players shone through, on the right track."

After the Uruguay defeat it was "Team not good enough, going in the wrong direction."

If they were to win tonight against an undermanned Costa Rica, we'll hear: "Wrong players chosen to begin with and tactics wrong. Everything else okay."

England lost to Italy and Uruguay.

Costa Rica beat them both.

England are odds-on (5/6) at the bookies to win the match, with Costa Rica out at 3/1.

Does that reflect the real winning possibility, I wonder, or just a hedge against the flow of desperately hopeful money being punted on England?

Meaningless game. Says nothing for England except that we continue to be a poor tournament team. World ranking should be much closer to 30.

Possibly related to Costa Rica resting key players.

Italy - Uruguay is on Channel 5.

I'm on True Vision. Bizarrely channel 668 EPG says it's showing the England game but is actually showing the Italy one, England game is on channel 678 (which the EPG says is the Italy game).

I agree. I was reading something earlier in the week (I'll try and find it) that was basically saying England are only actually about as good as Australia, Greece or teams of a similar standard and should really just be grateful to be at major tournaments. Thinking we'll ever do anything more is very much wishful thinking.

Perhaps being on the end of a thumping here and to go out of the tournament with 0 points is what we need for the powers that be to make major changes through all levels of football development in England. Germany did exactly that after their dismal Euro 2004 showing, the English FA should follow suit.

Yes but don't forget that True don't know their earhole from any other hole. They'll probably start renumbering channels at half time too.

Thanks, i didn't know about 678 and was getting annoyed that i found one game on three channels and not the other.

-*I typed this myself*-

Half-time 0-0.

Tell me,which is the team full of cosseted players getting paid telephone numbers each week and which is the one with part-time battlers playing for clubs like Club Sport Herediano?

I think I have just wasted 85 minutes of my life that I will never get back. Must be the most boring game of the WC so far

Followed live chat from the England match on BBC sport, since i watched the other match.

Oh dear oh dear what a barrage with negative comments for 93 minutes.

Was it really that poor?

Was not worth staying up for.

And just to put the tin lid on the evening for English sports fans our cricketers have just lost the Test series to Sri Lanka on the penultimate ball of the match. sad.png

But at least it was gripping stuff and in the end they made a fight of it.

Roy, take note.

Oh no, don't give them ideas as it's at least 2 weeks since they re-numbered channels.
