We've been living for some time with rats in the air conditioning ducts between the first and second floor, and I'm afraid have decided it's time to part company.

We don't think poison is a great idea, as it's in the A/C ducts, and we have a dog who might inadvertently get a dose. My wife contacted one company (don't know the name) which said they could take care of it, but we'd need a one-year maintenance contact for 27,000 baht.

Does anyone have experience with a company that can solve our murine problem for a more reasonable rate?

I have no experience with companies that can deal with rats. However living in rural Thailand I have had plenty of them. I've also had bird problems.

If you don't want to use poison you could try glue traps. These are the large plastic plates you smear the provided rubber glue all over the plate and place a snack in the center. Makro/Lotus all sell them. You will hear the rats screeching when they get stuck. They cost about 50 baht.

After using glue traps with good success my best working solution so far is cats. We have four now. I pity the birds and rats, however we don't have any more troubles. These felines are killing machines. I realize you have a dog, I do too, and the first cat we "hired" as a rat catcher was quick to teach the dog where her boundaries were. It took one cat scratch on the nose and our pooch was sorted and became quite accommodating.

I have had no sign of a living rat or mouse in our house now for more than a year. The cats are maintenance free and even though your rat problem is in the air-conditioning ducts a cat will find them. Somethings I think the only thing the cat thinks about, besides sex is; "where to find something new to kill"?

Cats are cleaner than dogs, they never leave droppings in the house or create smell. I realize a lot of people don't like cats but give one a try and if you don't like it, get rid of it.

Good luck.

If you'd prefer that they just left, rather than gluing them down and having to deal with the mess, pick up some ordinary 'Moth Balls' and place them in the areas where the rats are running around. They will vacate the area very quickly. After they are gone, move the mothballs to the extreme outside edges of your living space to keep them from coming back and free you from the chemical smell if you don't like it. I've used this method to get rid of mice, rats, squirrels in the attic, and skunks under the house at different times in different places. Only takes a day or three and they are gone!

The pellets are easy but then the rat goes to the most awkward area to die and you smell it days later.

Often a job for someone else just to remove the rotting corpse.

Worst job I have had to do here.

You need to find out how the rat is getting into your aircon system.

the big flat aircons are the easiest as they can get inside from underneath or if it isn't fixed up to the wall.

I had a similar problem and in the end sealed it with wide sticky backed plastic.

Try not to seal the rat in,they are very good at escaping out of anything by eating and scratching.

Agree that sticky pads maybe the first option, then try to seal the likely entry point.

Yes agree totally we have them inside also it keeps cockroaches at bay.

You can buy the balls, I buy 100g camphor chrystals from the tiny herb shop near warorot.

Camphor great for keeping anything fresh, show cupboard, wardrobes, laundry, towels, smoke, somtam smell, the little boys room

Purchase the electronic device, plug in and put into the air con duct.

They don't work! Of all the people I would suspect in not falling for this scam......clap2.gif

Rats and mice run from sudden noises. After a short while they get use to these devices and ignore them.

I had a friend who had a mice problem, tried one (looked different to this one) & he said it seemed to work.

I don't have rats, so I can't really say.

Now I don't know who to believe. Internet guy or friend? :P

They can do a lot of damage to an automobile's wiring harness. I had the electric one on my carport, and never saw then again....maybe the snakes got them...

An air con duct? I've never seen one in Thailand....or do you mean the blower unit from a split system? The techs can take those apart and put them back together easily. If it is real ducts; then that would be yet another reason to not have them. There have been more rats out since the rains started.

So you have cockroaches and rats in your house. perhaps another mechanism to keep vermin away is better hygene.

Thanks all for the great advice. The wife doesn't want to trap geckos with the glue traps, so we'll try the mothballs first. If no luck, then I think we'll have to sacrifice a few lizards with the glue traps.

I can only confirm this.

The land around my previous house used to be severely infested with almost anything that loves living on fallow land.

Rats, mice, frogs, cockroaches,... the whole shebang.

So it also attracted snakes as they see this land as their supermarket/food supply.

Then there was the occasional cadaver which was great for maggots/flies which attracted a lot of birds,....

Anyway, long story short,... I got me 2 little kittens at the local temple and 3 months later the whole area was cleaned up!

I also have 2 dogs. They all seem to get along pretty fine here in Thailand.

I don't know what your problem is Eric but I bet its hard to pronounce

If it has more than one syllable i'm positive that you would find it difficult to pronounce

When you graduate to glue traps be aware they are very noisy. A large rat will try to escape and drag the plate around frantically until totally exhausted. Then it will scream, and screech, for hours. Normally this happens between 2-4 AM.

I place a small rag over its head and then take a pair of pliers and break its neck. I found that quite unpleasant and now much prefer to leave the rat murdering to the cats.

I had forgotten these traps do also kill gheckos. They do. Also you must mind your traps because the dead rat after just a few days will be covered in maggots.

Good luck.

I expect you are ahead of me OP, but if you fix the rat problem and they go somewhere in your place to die that is not accessible to you, the smell of dead rotting rat is indescribably bad!

Get some traps put food in and catch them then just kill them, if you poison they will stink and encourage roaches. A grumpy rat on a glue trap is not the best thing to deal with, but the traps you can either empty a long way from house or kill them depending on your beliefs.
