Really sorry for the young guy, hope he will recover, and his attackers will be held responsible or banned…

However, brawls and attacks in nightlife and discos happen all over the World. As a poster (#10) mentioned, that is was not Thais attacking, but other foreign guests, so could happen anywhere.

Another poster (#2) said: »...if you really want to see what Happiness Thailand in Chaweng is like just hang around the area of entrance to the Ark Bar or around Green Mango soi at 3-6am you really will feel the love«

I’m not sure what the poster refers to, but those areas to me seems a lot more calm and friendly than many a nightlife area other places in the World. And yes, I’m a frequent guest in Chaweng’s nightlife, and I’m there between 1am and 5:30am, and I’m a regular at the “well known” dance venues for several years; actually the security there is quite high (I am impressed and always feel safe).

It’s not like folks are walking around in the dance venues and attacking or hitting strangers from behind. I have during the years seen some brawls amongst tourists, and always something seems to be going on first or one part is provoking – can be some misunderstandings that I don’t know – and then some folks cannot control their temper. Perhaps some tourist do wish to come for a fight rather than amusement and dance – I remember a (scaring) poll from Britain a few years ago, where three times as many of the young lads very looking for a fist fight during vacation rather than a date or sex…

Best thing to do is just calmly walk away to another area of the venue if any foreigner is rude (and hope he’s not attacking from behind)…

I also don't have great memories of Koh Samui.

I was there in about November 2008 at the free mango when the place turned into a scene from a John Wayne movie with guns going off and blood everywhere.

Although it is sad to see a teenager beat up, I fail to see what this has to do with Thailand. He was not assaulted by Thai men. It just happened to be on Samui during a Full Moon Party.

I do not mean to sound callous, but these kind of assaults happen every single weekend in Australia, the UK, Ireland etc.

Young men, pissed up (maybe some drugs involved) out on the town often leads to senseless violence.

Lets put things in perspective, shall we? I am happy to see that Samui police managed to catch the perps.

I fail to see the relevance of your first paragraph. Who said this was 'about Thailand'? Its a fact that it happened 'in' Thailand, that's all.

What perspective had been lost according to your last paragraph?

The Father's letter was gracious about Thailand. The letter was about a brutal and vicious attack, seemingly from behind, by other foreign nationals and about praise for the determined efforts of the Police.

Is this a "Chinese" taking out their frustrations on an "Australian"...? This may be considered a hate crime...and in the real world...get prison time...

Maybe they will reconsider admitting Mr. Chang and Mr. Wang. Your additional emails may help.

If their folks have money......both Cornell and Purdue will not bat an eyelid at any dubious record for either boy, in a foreign country.....they'll go straight through!

Press the U.S. Embassy - not sure where the perpetrators are from, or from where their visas were (or are in the process) of being issued, but definitely reach out:

http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/mobile//contact.html

They'll be receptive if you have specific information that would make the attackers inadmissible. A conviction is not always necessary to jam them up at the visa issuing stage, either. Same to revoke an already issued visa.

The State Department issues the visa but U.S. Customs and Border Protection makes the decision at the airport whether or not to let them enter into the U.S. I suppose it couldn't hurt to give them a heads up, especially if visas have been issued and these pukes are getting ready to start university soon. The only local Thai number I can find for CBP is +662-205-5391.

Best of luck...

Mr. Wang and Mr. Chang( full names cannot be disclosed for legal reasons) planned to attend university as undergraduates at Purdue and Cornell Universities in the United States respectively.

Hope they will not be granted visas with a criminal record.

sorry to say this but anyone who goes there is basically going to be open to this .....if you really want to see what Happiness Thailand in Chaweng is like just hang around the area of entrance to the Ark Bar or around Green Mango soi at 3-6am you really will feel the love

I was on Samui for a week quite recently (high season) and went out nearly every night to these mentioned places and never had any problems. Everyone seemed friendly and I left feeling like I'll definitely come back!

Only exception were the ladyboys who always tried to follow us home after finishing at that other night club (forgot what it's called, but stays open till 6am).

I see everyone so far is complaining about the Chinese picking on a 'good boy' Australian. No smoke without fire, are you sure it was not an unprovocted attack ? what about a drunk aussie mouthing off ? seen that too many times.

Just because the father thinks his boy is good does not make it so. Posters also claim the Chinese are spoilt rich kids but the Aussie isnt ? Get real, probably the attacked is a spoilt rich kid too, dont see to many poor aussies kids living in Thailand.

Every weekend drunk youths get into fights all around the world but the posters here want to string the perps up, ruin their future.....how many of those never got into a drunken fight ?

Never seen so many hang them high brigade in one place until I started reading Thaivisa forums, what right have you to judge especaly when you have only one side of the story by a naive parent.

Ever seen a young bloke king hit on the dance floor or in a club because the girls like him?

Local word is that he was getting on well with a young lady and the young Chinese guy had his eye on the same lady.

Jealousy got the better of him and he smashed him in the face with a bottle or glass ashtray from side on.

They will get a conviction out of this, just give it a few more weeks.

Just because he lost the fight, doesn't automatically make him the victim. He got 3 punches to the face, 2 to the mouth and one in the eye. This doesn't sound like an attack from behind, it sounds like it was face to face. It was all over in 5 seconds which suggests it wasn't any kind of prolonged assault.

Maybe he was innocent maybe he was not, probably 50/50 between drunken youths, he just came off the worst.

When a parent starts a story telling how wonderful their child is, it usually turns out that the opposite is true.

As for missing out on going to University because he got a split lip and a few teeth knocked out, utter hogwash. That sounds like an excuse for their wayward son, who wasn't going to get the required grades in the first place.

Hang on.

Every newspaper in the land has daily photos of criminal suspects with their name, address and Thai ID info. While being pointed at.

Ok, we have one side of the story, I would like to know what had taken place between the parties involved before the attack what passed between these young men words spoken, or just looks. I know unprovoked attacks happen but typically they are rare. Good luck to Jack on a speedy recovery.

All that matters is that the two assailants had the choice to walk away and instead they chose to assault one person by surprise attack with the intent of causing significant bodily harm.

Nothing else matters.

The fact the two accused have lawyered up and chosen not to provide statements lends further credibility to the victims story.

Those Universities are interested in one thing--money.

They could care a less about this incident and could not even prevent their admission unless there is an actual criminal record. Short of that, their influential fathers would have a field day.

Like it or not--those boys are part of that emerging class of global citizen that is above the law.

Some of them run over cops in expensive sports cars.

Are you kidding me? These Universities have thousands of applicants and don't need the money. They only take the brightest students that have shown scholastic aptitude and exemplary behaviour. They don't need nor want young wanna be gangsters.

Back to the op, let's hope the son heals well.

Crap loads of Chinese students at Purdue so I would assume lots of Wang's and Chang's. I know some people at my former University if I had the full name of the one who is going there I would throw up a red flag.

Whats this line of crap about?????? Guilty already???? Lets hang them before a verdict is in??? Get real folks.

I wish you were correct, however, You have not kept pace with the profit motive of todays Institutions of Higher Learning,

Do you honestly think they are going to take action on a post from Thailand about an opinion piece written by someone from Australia that provides two fictitious names of an incident that may or may not have occurred and that no court action has determined the guilt of either of the two alleged assailants?

Do you have any idea what the tuition rate is for non-American students?

But don't take my word for it. By all means follow up on this thread with the outcome of this effort in a couple of months after classes have started ;-)

Cheers

How can a normal thinking man believe the short explanation of Jack dancing, minding his own business, being attacked by 2 people for no reason at all. There had to be words, gestures and or bad body language happening. Who was the girl he was dancing with???? Didn't see a thing????

It doesn't matter if he provoked them. Assaulting someone over a discussion isn't acceptable.

Alcohol, drugs and testosterone are a volatile mix.

Likely to be the problem but then again those who committed the assault actually have no balls at all! sad.png

You wish.......Try telling the poor guy who was attacked that.

They got too much balls, don't give a hoot about anyone, are most likely extremely vicious and that is a problem victims face everyday

Of course I could not and would not tell the victim that. Yes they are vicious.

"no balls" creeps back into the crowd - "not me Sir".

Any person who does not take responsibility for their actions has "no balls"!

If you read the whole article it says "After thorough and careful examination by three specialists that will all work as a team to reconstruct Jacks mouth we now know that it will take over a year to repair his mouth to only 80% of that that it was previously. It has now been confirmed that Jack will require numerous bone grafts from a cadaver and gum grafts from his own p

alette in order to rebuild the top, front jaw bone area before the teeth implants may be inserted."

Even if you miss a couple of months of uni it can be pretty hard to get back into it and it might easily ruin your grades for the year.

Very naive comment. If you'd ever worked security at a night club, which you obviously have not, you'd know that unprovoked assaults are common place. Testosterone and alchohol are the ingredients that when mixed together cause a personality change in outwardly rational men.

Why did jacky-boy get attacked so brutally? Perhaps he had a spat beforehand with these attackers? I feel that there is something missing in this story. In addition, you get what you get going to these chump-fests..anything goes when you enter this type of thing.
