By Digital Content

BANGKOK, July 14 -- The recent establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) by Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus will benefit Thailand’s trade and investment in future, according to Kalaya Sirikul, director of Thailand’s International Trade Promotion Office in Moscow.

Thailand, as a centre of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), has enjoyed warm relations with Russia for 117 years should benefit from the EEU, signed by the three countries in late May. The agreement becomes effective on January 1, Ms Kalaya said.

The three countries have a combined population of 170 million and are undoubtedly large in terms of the global economy, she said. The EEU would help push Russia and the two others to play a larger role.

Russia has started playing prominent roles in a number of Asian countries including China, India, Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia recently, she said, adding that Thailand which is considered as the centre of ASEAN should speed up considering what merchandise and services it could offer to Russia during the next three to five years.
