Good jazz band to hire?

Featured Replies

Hi all. I'm getting married in October and we're looking to hire a good classical jazz band to play. Does anyone have any suggestions for bands to hire or for where to look? We're going to go to the Jazz Co-op to watch some musicians there, but I'd love a few more ideas. Thanks!

Those of you that were here in them days may remember the first jazz bar in Chiang Mai, The Baritone, that started in the Warrorot market, above the flower shops and eventually moved to Kad Suan Gaew. The main man was Teh Intaranan, who was educated at Berkley and I believe is now a music teacher and probably still plays somewhere. I know he was involved in the Chiang Mai Jazz festival. You may find contact details by googling his name or Chiangmai Jazz Festival. It sounds like a great wedding party you're planning. good luck.

Check out the North Gate Jazz club at inner side of the Chang Phuak Gate where the very best jazz players in Chiang Mai can join as guest players.

What is "classical jazz"? Do you mean traditional?

Like Ragtime and Dixie for example?

Thanks for the replies! I will certainly try to find Teh and will check out the North Gate Jazz Club. As for classic Jazz, I'm thinking along the likes of 1920s- 1950s swing, blues and Dixie. I've found a fair amount of contemporary jazz in CM but not much traditional.

Go to North Gate jazz coop on Thursday (or Saturday) at 11:00. Talk to Kevin the trumpet player (who leads the group). He teaches jazz (at Payap Univ. I think) and knows all of the top jazz musicians in town. If the pay was decent I am sure he could put together a impromptu group that could flat-out nail jazz from any decade of the 20th century.
