Are there any advantages/ disadvantages for my Thai wife to take on my surname. We plan on moving to Thailand within 2 years. Thanks for the input in advance.

Wife has my surname never found it to be an advantage nor disadvantage.

I think it helps when applying for her visa to vist the UK and certainly stops "assumptions" when booking in to hotels etc.

None. Her Thai passport and id card are in her farang name. Don't forget surnames have only been in use for about 100 years I believe hence the common use of first names whatever the situation.

When we lived inthe UK she used my surname ,here in Thailand as she deals with Thais mainly she uses hers, same with our son everyone knows she is married to me

Married (in Australia) over twenty years, have never registered it in Thailand.

My wife is Mrs Songhua in all matters Australia and has remained Miss Thai Name in all matters in Thailand. Includes her id, licences, property, bank accounts, vehicle registration etc. Even her passports show different surnames.

Don't know if there are any disadvantages or not - she's simply never bothered to change her name in Thailand.

There used to only be one disadvantage- she couldn't buy land. This is no longer the case.

If only theyd extend it to other things for marriages lasting 5 years plus for us to stay here easier or at least wipe out the 90 day report or heaven forbid let us own some land up to a few rai.

My wife and I shared the same surname when we met, when she first met me she thought I was joking until she saw my id. Her father was worried we might be related at first.....keepin it in the family :P

Certainly has created confusion when doing official paperwork on forms and so forth.

I find it's useful as we travel a lot to other countries and it makes life easier with Visa'a etc. When you visit places like the US or New Zealand where there are a lot of Motels, they appear happier to see that you are actually married....although anyone can change their name if they want to !

Can a wife still buy land if she is still married & has a deranged surname, without husband signing the form saying that it is her own money ?

One day ,,,,,,,,,,,,,
