BMA orders sellers who occupy footpath on Ratchadamnoen to move out by Thursday

BANGKOK, 16 July 2014 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has declared that lottery selling stalls on the footpaths along Ratchadamnoen Rd. must be removed by Thursday, to allow workers to start beautifying the area and also to improve road traffic.

Police Major General Wichai Sangpraphai, adviser to the Bangkok governor, held a meeting with related City Hall agencies on Tuesday to discuss improvements to the area around the Supreme Court and at Ratchadamnoen Rd.

According to those at the meeting, a fence will be erected around the court and decorated with plants. Historical images related to Rattanakosin City will also be put up along the fence.

Officials expect the beautifying work will commence immediately after all lottery sellers have relocated. Vendors along Ratchadamnoen will need to relocate to Tha Din Daeng area to sell their products.

According to Pol. Maj. Gen. Wichai, vendors who still occupy the footpath along the road on Thursday will be prosecuted. He explained that once the renovation work is complete, Bangkok residents will have greater convenience when walking on the footpath and traffic congestion will be reduced.

Now if only they could keep the motorbikes off the footpaths. Has Sukhumvit been cleared of all the sidewalk sellers?

I love going full throttle on the footpath watching foreigners jump away. While the locals are used to it and don't blink an eye... Those foreigners only slow me down. Why wont they just walk on the road cheesy.gif

Just joking, most of the motorbikes that I have seen on the footpath are MC taxis not the most law abiding people.

I came out of the subway on last Monday night at about 10pm on the exit that leads to one of Bangkok's night entertainment spots, and the sidewalk was completely empty.

Usually the sidewalk is almost completely blocked with about 20 or so bars set up like food stalls. Hard to navigate through it without being groped and hassled.

I'm not sure if they were not there because it was a Monday, or have they been permanently removed?

Anybody pass by there in the last few days?

Suppose they werent's there because it was Khao Phansa Day (the day of entering the buddist lent, a major religious holiday in Thailand)

The bars were open as normal, and theusual gaggle of touts & taxi drivers were plugging up the end of the soi. I think they used to clean the streets on Mondays, or was that a different day?

Anyway I was just wondering if they were all back there by Tuesday.
