Yala beefs up security during last ten days of Ramadan

YALA, 18 July 2014 (NNT) -- Yala police chief has instructed his officers to be on alert during the last ten days of the holy fasting month in light of a warning of possible assaults.

According to Pol. Maj. Gen Songkiat Watakul, officers in all 17 district police stations have been ordered to be on alert while closely monitoring for any sign of insurgent attacks in the last ten days of Ramadan, the fasting month of Muslims, in the southernmost provinces of Thailand.

There have been no severe attacks on both local authorities and residents in the past 20 days. However, informants have warned that some insurgent groups have planned to stir up the situation before the end of the holy month; therefore, officers should be extra careful while they are out to protect residents because as they too are targeted, said the Police Major General.
