Special Report: Mother’s Day activities to be held at Ambara Gardens and Royal Plaza

BANGKOK: -- The Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office will organize various activities, as part of the celebrations of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 82nd birthday anniversary on August 12th, 2014.

Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office M.L. Panadda Diskul said the activities would take place at the Ambara Gardens and the Royal Plaza in Bangkok on August 9 and 10, 2014.

Among the activities are demonstrations of craft-making by the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques (SUPPORT), khon performances, a light and sound presentation, and a candle-lit tribute paying ceremony. A small garden will be arranged as a model food bank at the ceremonial ground.

Furthermore, there will be a casting of a Buddha image in accordance with Her Majesty’s day of birth to commemorate Her Majesty’s seventh cycle, or 84th, birthday anniversary. Cash donations from the public will be used to build the Buddha images, which will be completed by 2016, in time for the celebrations of Her Majesty the Queen’s 84th birthday.

Throughout the more than 60 years of His Majesty the King’s reign, Her Majesty the Queen has always stood by his side, working actively and tirelessly to improve the life of the people. On her numerous travels across the country to visit local people, she has made close contact with the true living conditions of her subjects and learned much about the Thai people in rural areas.

In July 1976, Her Majesty established the SUPPORT Foundation to form women’s groups, and provided them with equipment, materials, and training in cottage industries. With sufficient training, farmers are able to produce high-quality crafts. Most of the crafts are indigenous to the areas where the projects have been set up and use locally available raw materials.

Apart from benefiting craft makers and their families, SUPPORT plays a part in reviving traditional crafts and preserving them. Moreover, it helps strengthen the role and status of women in their community.

Her Majesty the Queen has also played a vital role in preserving the khon masked drama, which was falling into decline. Since 2009, the SUPPORT Foundation, at the command of Her Majesty the Queen, has organized khon performances at the Thailand Cultural Center in Bangkok. Young performers have been selected from colleges of dramatic arts and other institutes across the country.

Her Majesty the Queen has also initiated a community food bank project, in an effort to create more food sources to ensure food security. The community food bank has contributed to the implementation of other projects, including model farms currently operating across the country, employing a great number of local people, and producing nutritious and safe food products.

The Philippines satisfied with Thailand’s roadmap

MANILA, July 19 -- Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Puangketkeow, held talks with the Philippines Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Albert del Rosario, on Thailand’s political situation and cooperation between the two countries.

The talks were held Friday at Mr Rosario’s office in which he reportedly told Mr Sihasak that the Philippines was satisfied with Thailand's progress in heading toward a democratic system in line with the roadmap laid out by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and the country would listen to the voice of the people.

The Philippines government had earlier downgraded Thailand following the May 22 military takeover and advised its citizen to avoid travelling to the kingdom.

Mr Rosario reportedly told Mr Sihasak that his government would review Thailand’s status if the political situation here returned to normal.

Mr Sihasak said he had briefed Mr Rosario and assured the latter that Thailand would adhere to a democratic system and would continue several major projects important to the country’s economy, while the Philippines secretary for Foreign Affairs replied that his country attaches great importance to Thailand because they are both ASEAN members.

According to Mr Sihasak, Mr Rosario supported NCPO’s roadmap and hoped that this country would achieve success as it would help strengthen ASEAN’s stability.

He said ASEAN ministers and the European Union (EU) would hold a meeting in Brussels next week. EU ministers are expected to raise the situation in Thailand for discussion during the meeting, while Mr Sihasak said he is ready to answer them.

Mr Sihasak said the military takeover in Thailand was not what several Western countries understood, as Thailand has not disappeared from the map and Thailand’s economy is still ranked number 2 in the ASEAN region.

Therefore, Thailand has to look forward for both political and economic issues at the same time, he added. (MCOT online news)

NCPO says reform in second phase to address 11 issues
By Digital Content

14057616585181-640x390x1.jpg

BANGKOK, July 19 -- National reform during the second phase would address 11 issues or possibly more and needed cooperation from every sector before implementation in the third phase, according to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) leader and army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha.

Speaking during his weekly TV address late on Friday, Gen Prayuth said the NCPO would concentrate on political reform, anti-corruption, good governance and transparency, efficient checks-and-balances on the government and other measures which he hoped would satisfy Thailand’s international partners.

As long as differences exist and could not be settled, reform on these issues would be difficult to achieve, he said, adding that another issue was that a lack of applicants to become reform council members could pose an obstacle for implementation.

People invited by the NCPO should apply for council member seats, said Gen Prayuth, adding that arguing would only create divisiveness in the society and it also shows that they "aren’t sincere about reforming the country.”

On the national economy, Gen Prayuth said Thailand, which is a large economy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and plays a major role in production, services and outside investment, as well a playing significant role in several international platforms, would have to cooperate with others in order to achieve a mutual beneficial future.

Gen Prayuth said he did not want to see Thailand’s friendly countries limit constructive activities with the military or NCPO now, and should allow Thailand to participate in international forums, as it would also offer more benefits to them.

He urged friendly nations to observe improvements in the kingdom afte the May 22 military takeover, when the NCPO seized power in the country, and to “stop attacking” the kingdom. (MCOT online news)
