BMA to propose long-term flood control plans to NCPO

BANGKOK, 22 July 2014 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is set to present a long-term solution to prevent future floods in Bangkok to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

Seventeen projects will be proposed to the NCPO in a bid to maximize the effectiveness of the existing flood control system. These projects have been hand-picked from 66 projects earlier proposed to the previous administration.

The 17 projects set to be implemented over the span of 15 years are reportedly worth nearly 24 billion baht. The plans will be proposed as part of the NCPO’s future water management policy.

The projects including canal-dredging work, constructions of more flood barriers, and water-retention areas will help divert floodwater to the Chao Phraya River and other water sources.

Plans to build mega tunnels included in the projects will be carried out in Bueng Nong Bon and Thawee Wattana.

BMA seeks NCPO approval for flood-prevention projects
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will seek approval in principle from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) for 17 flood-prevention projects worth Bt23.97 billion.

The city will later discuss the entire plan with the NCPO so as to ensure the effort is integrated with other provinces in the vicinity.

The 17 projects were selected from 66 that had been proposed to the previous administration's Water and Flood Management Commission, BMA deputy permanent-secretary Sanya Cheenimitr said yesterday.

The 17 projects, deemed as urgent and important, will span five fiscal years (2015-2019) and will focus on the development of flood-preventing and water-draining system in neighbouring provinces, the main canals' dredging as well as the construction of flood barriers and water-draining tunnels, he explained.

At last, some movement. I would hope that the BMA reports in a clear, concise and transparent manner, where and to whom the money is being paid, for what! And that the work is carried out punctually and is technically correct and proven to be working.

Now is the time to cut out the corruption and cronyism.

But will it happen? Just asking.
