After saying farewell to the plan of buying a scooter, me and my girlfriend bought a new car (Mitsubishi Attrage GLS Ltd.). We have only put down a refundable deposit of 5,000 baht, so we didn't take possession of it yet (Plan to do so in the next month).

Both the motorcycle as well as the Mitsubishi dealer said it's only possible to register the car in my name if I have a work permit and the only solution would be to register it on my GF's name.

I no longer work so have a retirement visa (more correctly: 1 year extension based on retirement) for the last 5 years, but apparently that won't do it.

As I don't want the risk that my GF will 'run off' with the car, I thought of having the Misubishi dealer make the invoice and receipt in my name so I can prove I am the owner. My GF will be the regular driver, as I don't have a driver's license (but will get one soon).

Is there any way to register it in my name?

Thank you for your reply.

You don't need a work permit to have a car or bike registered in your name.
You'll need to get a "certificate of residence" either from immigration, your embassy or local police depending on where you live. You also need this certificate to obtain a driving licence so get 2

A yellow house book can also be used in lieu of certificate of residence ( if you have one) someone is feeding you false information at the dealership!

The dealer is talking nonsense, frankly you need to put your foot down with a smile and tell em to get the car put in your name or you will go somewhere else and take your deposit back.

You didn't mention whether you were financing it or paying cash.  That makes no difference in terms of having it in your name, which you can without the WP, but whether you need a Thai guarantor to sign also.  The latter depends on the dealer and how much down payment you are making and your financial stability.

The bottom line, there are really no circumstances where you can not have the car in your name regardless of paying cash, financing, work permit, etc.  The dealer(s) don't know what they are talking about  or <fill in the blanks here>.

Thank you all for your replies.

There are no financing issues as I pay in cash.

My girlfriend and myself have been together with the sales lady all the time. And I speak fluently Thai (been here for 30 odd years) so there has been no private conversation between them.

My gf doesn't mind in who's name it is and she has not persuaded me to put it her name. What I wonder what makes who's the owner. The registration or the owner of the invoice/receipt.

I will try to push the dealer to put everything in my name so I feel safer. What documents do I need to register with the Transport Department? Would a Retirement visa suffice or do I need a document from the Immigration/Embassy? Do I need a driver's license? I dont have any experience with this particular matter.

You only need a certificate of residency from immigration. I bought 3 different cars and many motors here in my name. They are feeding you hogwash.

Don't push, insist when you pay the full amount make sure the receipt is in your name only.

After receiving the motor usually the registration will be done by the dealer and about 4 weeks later you will get the blue book for the car in your name.

It wouldn't be a bad idea if you got your driving licence in the meantime, many threads on that, for what you need.biggrin.png

Why not try a different dealer but this time go on your own and see what they tell you about registration? With no gf in tow you may get a different reaction! ( you don't have to buy the car from them but it will clarify the issue over registration for you)

As you speak Thai ask to see the boss, or phone head office, they will perhaps have a word for you.

My motor is in my name, no problem. If my stuff goes pear shaped I have somewhere to sleep......laugh.png

The book will say who the owner is. The invoice says who the buyer was. Ideally have both in your name/address. The dealer will register your ownership.

I dont understand why you involve your thai gf if you speak thai. Any foreigner can buy cars here if you pay cash, it will be registered in your name, doesnt matter what type of visa your on. They will not ask for your thai driving license.

Maybe he is just a familyman, who does not buy a car for himself but for the family.

Correct Steven. As she's part of my family. I feel 'we' buy a car. As she will be my chauffeur, she is involved just as I am.

I talk to the dealer after my gf has got her driving license and additional driving lessons in Bangkok.

In the meanwhile, thanks to all for replying. If anyone has something useful to add, please do.

So two independent  dealers tell you an untruth ?

looks like someone is telling them what to say to you.

Time to purchase a new gf before you purchase new car.

Correct. Exactly what happened to me at the Proton dealership, and I was told the same story when I was about to buy my present car because I was going around with my supervisor from work. He actually wanted the car in his name, but I told him no, that he should just be my guarantor. I ended up paying cash for a used car. Don't ever agree to their scam.

Of course yoou can have a the car in your name. You are paying cash, so why would the dealer care? They get their money and there is no risk of you running off without making repayments. It could be a mitsubishi policy, but I'm not sure. Try another dealer without gf present. If they no satisfaction, then go buy a different brand. I have a suzuki swift and really like it. The swift is in my names but we also have a honda civic in my name. I don't recall the details of the purchase though. I just needed a large downpayment as it was my first purchase here.

The dealer takes care of the registration so that's why they need the correct documents. I will make a trip to the embassy and get my address confirmed. That should take care of it.

And correct documents are: workpermit or yellow housebook or address verification from immigration. No need at all to fork out big bucks at the embassy for this.
