TRAFFIC LAW
Texting using steering wheel holder illegal

BANGKOK: -- Police have warned drivers about using their smartphones to text or chat while driving, deputy metropolitan police commissioner Pol Maj Gen Adul Narongsak said on Wednesday.

The warning came after it was found that some drivers were placing their mobile phone in a holder and attaching the holder to the steering wheels so as to be able to enter text while driving.

Adul reminded road users that this practice is illegal as the law prohibits using a phone while driving. Any offender will be fined between Bt400 and Bt1,000.

Chatting while driving is considered a distraction as the driver has to look at the phone and use his hand to type.

The law allows the use of handsfree phones for talking only. Cases will be referred to the court, the deputy commissioner said.

In my 10 years of living in Thailand and driving some 90,000km around the country, the 5 accidents I have witnessed and the multitude of near misses have all be associated with mobile phone use while driving, the two most serious where in Pattaya on Sukumvit road at a red traffic light with me on foot crossing the road about 100m from the junction, both occasions watched 2x drivers approach the stopped line of traffic at speed while looking down at a phone - when they looked up it was too late to stop, one of the vehicles (a pickup) rear ended the last car in the line and proceeded to do a cartwheel over that car and hit several other cars in the line finally resting on it's roof in the central flood drain

apart from the fact that using mobile phones while driving causes accidents - having this thing attached to the steering wheel will also obstruct  proper unhindered access

The police really need to clamp down on mobile phone use while driving, most modern vehicles in the west have BT handsfree built in

It is surprising that no better technology has been invented to stop or at least identify mobile phone users when driving other than a Thai cop running out into the middle of the road trying to see through the film. Texters riding motorbikes blow my mind.

What about the driver with a toddler sitting on his lap

see that all the time,or standing up between the front

seats,an emergency brake and the kid would be

through the windscreen like a rocket,no matter how

many laws, people will continue to do stupid things,it

must be in their genes.

Yes. You are speaking out of my mind. My sister in laws family let her son jumping around the car while driving 120km/h . And actually her husband is not a good driver. (paid for his license because of not passing the tests)

After keep saying it for many months I gave up. Only hope for the poor boy to never be the rocket sad.png

As we all know, many Thais have little or no sense of consequence.

I am more concerned and worried about the innocent 'bystanders' who get wounded or killed or worse by these completely irresponsible drivers. I do NOT care at all for these drivers as long they kill only themselves.

He must be bad if he can't pass a test here.

Agreed, but if the laws are enforced things might change.

First time I tried to buy a baby seat, everyone looked at me as if I was talking about a flying saucer. Strange faring. What will we think of next?

Good idea. We have it here in CA. About time the Thais did something about it. But when will they get around to making sure that Thai drivers understand what the yellow line down the center of the road is for... hint... it not just a suggestion!

What it is. People have seen too many movies where the driver talks to his passenger and drives whilst not looking at the road.

Talking to the passenger.

This has entered people's subconscious as an acceptable way to drive. As in the movies.

The first person I ever saw texting while riding a motor bike about 3 years ago, was a gorgeous Euro girl, on a packed midday on

Jalan Legian in Bali. I was actually impressed, however have never tried it.

what about the DVD screen things they have in the front to watch while 'driving'?

Those should not be able to show something else than a routeplanner
But usually they get that safety feature out before it leaves the showroom.
400 to 1000 thb fine is absurd low even for thai people .

Interestingly they are showing a picture of somebody using GPS which I would think wouldn't be illegal if they didn't program it while driving. The positioning of the phone would also make easy use for hands free talking but would actually make it difficult to text unless you didn't plan on turning.
