I've worn Rigid Gas Permeable (RPG) contact lenses all my life, but never bought any in Thailand.

I would like to have new RPG contact lenses measured in Bangkok, but most places do not have equipment for some RPG parameters such as Base Curve (curvature). Apparently soft contacts are the norm here .... but I have astigmatism, which is not solved with soft lenses.

At minimum, I would like a place which can provide me with the full specs for a RPG lenses (so I can send off for a pair to be made overseas), or, if they make RPGs in Thailand, I can also buy from them in BKK.

Can anyone suggest places or phone numbers which can provide such a service?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the link - it was an old thread (last post July 2012).

I did phone the numbers that looked promising (Bangkok Refraction Hospital, BRH) but they were disconnected. I even went to Sukhumvit 20 (the BRH clinic), but a new building is being built at that corner, and BRH is no more on that site. An internet search also drew a blank for BRH.

That thread also mentioned a "Bangkok Eye Institute", BEI, but again Google did not turn up any info on BEI.

So .... anyone have other suggestions? Thank you

I found an old email address for Dr. Vitaya at the old BRH and sent an email. Maybe there'll be some response.

Suggest you consult Rutnin http://www.rutnin.com/eng/ or Bumrungrad. They can probably handle all the RGP measurments. A doc at Bumrungrad once told me she could order RGPs.

Bumrungrad often answers emails. You might start there: https://www.bumrungrad.com/en/contact-us/contact-details

Good luck and let us know what you find!

Thanks for the further tips. Let me know if you get a new phone # for BRH.

I'm still wearing the pair I got from the UK, but I think my eyes are getting slightly more long-sighted ... smile.png

Tant pis, as my French teacher would have said.

And thank you for your detective work!

If I encounter further developments over the next few weeks, I will share on this forum.

I am due to go to Singapore later this year ,,,, a few years ago I had a pair of RPG contacts lenses measured up and made at Raffles Place, so that might be another possibility. Cheers.

RPG type in India into your search, only a couple of hours away and cheap travel

Thanks - I've not thought about India, as I am more familiar with S'pore.

I've never been to India, but friends who have tell me it's fascinating.

Success!

I was able to track Dr Vitaya down. He operates out of Clinic 2000 (formerly the Bangkok Eye Institute), which specialises in all things ophthalmological, located in its own building on the main road at Phaholyothin Road, Soi 67/1, on the northern side of Bangkok. 02 551 2451.

I had a very similar pleasant interaction as "TallGuyJohninBKK" from 2012 (see post #2 above). Dr Vitaya knows his stuff - he caters for soft, hard and rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses, which can be ordered from his clinic. Alternatively, he can just give you a thorough examination for prescription purposes.

I'm very pleased with my experience, and could easily tell that Dr Vitaya is one of the most knowledgeable practitioners in this field. My half-hour consultation was charged a reasonable fee, considering the rarity of RPG experts in Thailand. The actual examination was quite quick, but I asked a lot of questions(!) and he was eager to educate me.

He was educated overseas and told me that he has other foreign clients (patients?).

For those who may be interested, best phone up to check when he's going to be at the clinic first.

I've also worn Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses for many years, in my case due to keratoconus (conical cornea).

For the past 3 years I've been prescribed RPG lenses at Rutnin Eye Hospital in Bangkok, however after losing one of my lenses recently, I was unable to order a replacement lens at the Contact Lens Centre there. I was told that they no longer supply RGP lenses due to a problem with their supplier.

I then made an appointment to see the contact lens specialist at Bumrungrad International Hospital. They also informed me that they no longer supplied RGP contact lenses due to a problem with their supplier.

Luckily, after seeing the post here, I was able to make an appointment to see Dr. Vitaya at Clinic 2000 and order a new pair of RGP lenses which should be ready in a week. Thanks to tx22cb for providing the details for Dr. Vitaya, as it is proving difficult to order RPG lenses in Bangkok. The phone number provided (02 551 2451) and address of the clinic (Praholyothin Road, Soi 67/1) are still up to date,
