Living in BKK for a year on 8 grand?

And just to add to " my words of wisdom " viewers......

As this thread is all about living in Bangkok and how cheap you can live in this " seriously cool " City then it should be noted ( are you making a note viewers...? ) That the great thing about Bangkok is " socializing costs nothing " because it is a playground for flirting, chatting and generally make a fool of yourself ( with fabulous results may i add ) There really is " no excuse " gentleman. So i would suggest spending a little bit more time outside in the sun ( nothing worse than strolling about looking like " rentaghost " ) and start being a little bit silly..............

I do believe you.

But if one of these ladies wants to meet you again, where do you take her on your 8k a month budget?

Unfortunately my monthly budget is currently 6K a month ( all in ) but I seem to do OK.It would have to be a very special lady for me to take out as I have no interest in having a relationship with anybody ( nothing to do with funds) My last relationship was over 15 years ago. So I do meet some ladies again from time to time " as friends only " (which I prefer) and go for a walk in the park with an ice cream.I am a very honest person and always explain to them my " financial status " (Critical ) but the great thing is with so many Thai ladies obsessed with money at least if she does want to meet me for an ice cream and a stroll in the park then at least I know she likes me! I honestly doubt that I would think them lovely but in any case its the location that is the problem. Most single Farang want easy access to amenities such as internet , restaurants , bars , shops and markets , entertainment etc. A fluent Thai speaker who enjoys his own company might be fine , otherwise the bus/ cab fares will soon add up.

yeah I see your point about the location and cost of transport etc... I have only stayed in a village once, just a couple of days one night, at a friend of a friends house... Have to say I liked it there, house people village very nice... Thought at the time I could live somewhere like this, just going into town for a couple of nights a week maybe.. Yeah I like a few beers in the bars etc when I am in Thailand.. If I lived there don't think I would want to be in the bars every night!! What I wouldn't want to do is stay in a apartment full of farangs, spend all day and night in a bar with same and eat nothing but farang food all the time, which is what some seem to want to do..

That's why if you did live your life in the bars and eating farang food every day (kind respect to those who do....) Then life will obviously become very expensive! You can live in Bangkok from as little as 4,000 USD a year if you live a simple & basic life 8,000 USD a year living in Bangkok you could live a Rock & Roll lifestyle (part time)

The difference is buying a coffee in Starbucks for 130 baht or Thai coffee shop for 25 baht ! ( I must admit i rather like the hot chocolate viewers...) F.J

Yeah I agree with that..

yeah maybe it is odd?? I like to mix with both farangs & Thai"s not just with farangs all the time.. If that's so odd so be it!

What I wouldn't want to do is stay in a apartment full of farangs, spend all day and night in a bar with same and eat nothing but farang food all the time, which is what some seem to want to do..

Yes this I find odd too

There's another thread knocking about "favourite bar in BKK" and everyone who replies said their fave bar was one of the English / Irish / Expat / Sports bars most of which are like a poor imitation of a bad bar from back home.

But there has to be a balance IMO. Living like a minimum wage Thai totally defeats the purpose of being in Thailand for me, The joy of living there is that because things are so cheap you can improve your standard of living and live better than you can back home.

If you go to Thailand and are living in a worse condition then what's the point?

Not saying canary is, he seems to enjoy his life here so fair enough, but many do seem to come here and live really miserable lives full of cheapness for the sake of being cheap

You describe Thai ladies as being obsessed with money. hmmmm I think it's more fair to say a lady anywhere might like to be treated to more than a 10 baht ice cream and a 15 km walk. You're the one who put his business on the street, so as asked before........Do you live this frugal lifestyle out of necessity or by choice.??? You seem to glamorize living on a shoestring instead of a down to earth, sensible lifestyle.

Sorry but you come to Thailand with hardly enough money to get by and expect to be able to swan around on a fake visa? No wonder Thailand wants to rid themselves of this type of Western loser.

You are no better than an illegal Mexican living in the USA, in fact I would say they are better seeing as they have economic reasons to be there.

You guys can sip your nescafe from your fan cooled room eating paupers Thai food (and the street food here is very poor made of cheap ingredients) while I will be hanging out with my friends eating Aussie steak and sipping my Sav Blanc before going on to a high end nightclub.

Guess you will end up staying in your sweaty little grief-hole having a pot noodle and looking at porn.

Canarysun, my wife asks 2 questions:

Why don't you become a monk? As then your expenses will reduce even further (perhaps to nothing?) yet your lifestyle will remain almost unchanged, less a few chants and what-not. It seems you're the ideal candidate and would fit right in

Other was are you really that happy? And is it not lonely with no wife, no kids etc?

Can you give a link to Thai street food being a cheap intimadation of cheap Thai street food ?

If you want to put someone down at least try.

Dear Grindting and your dear lady wife....

Firstly i find it quite easy living on a low budget here in Thailand.I am not materialistic and i do enjoy " The Simple Life " i am also busy " outside every single day " ( apart from when it's raining " Cats & Dogs " ) This morning i was awake at 06.00 and after a few " buddy Dean " 3 in 1 coffees i went off on a long stroll (12km) and stopped to take some photos ( and a bit of socializing en route ..) i bought a fresh pineapple for my lunch and spent the afternoon " on my rock " on the beach lazing in the sun with cool tunes ( Paul Carrack ) and swimming off the rocks.( Ideal for swimming today as the water was clear and very few jelly fish about......) I guess that's a normal day for me ( maybe tomorrow i shall go out and about on the train in the morning and take a picnic lunch with me and spend the afternoon on the beach again....)

Now your wife thinks i should become a Monk? LOL Perhaps you can tell your wife that i have in fact already considered the idea ( seriously ) as i do have an interest in " Buddha Meditation " although not sure about the " wandering about with an orange bed sheet " would be such a cool idea..... But hey i am always open to new ideas...( not all temples will accept farang but there are many that do )

Am i happy ? Yes i am happy and content and a very " chirpy person " who doesn't take himself or life very seriously.Although my parents " turned there back on me years ago " ( when i was small ) I actually do very well for myself I never get lonely i have been single for most of my life and after all these years it feels normal.I have no interest in a relationship.I have a few friends here in Thailand ( which are very genuine people and busy with there own married lives.) My life is certainly not " Glamorous " or " Rock and Roll " but it suits me.I make the most of every day as i came here for " The climate, the way of life and this fab outdoor lifestyle " i previously lived in the canary islands for 20 years and speak fluent Spanish ( ideal for when living in Thailand...)

Kind regards to you and your wife,

Farang Jaidee x

Sorry the street food in Thailand is not fit for Westerners, if you enjoy it then you are either a) deluded.........or B) broke.

It is all deep fried, over cooked spicy slop. Funny how Thai's think Western food is so bland yet the ones with money and hence the choice pack out Western restaurants / coffee shops while the paupers eat their cheap rubbish on the street.

Thai street food is a ticket to heart attack city.

That must explain why far more westeners suffer heart attach's than Thais

Living in Thailand i like to eat Thai food as much as possible and there is nothing wrong with eating food from the markets but i have to admit after almost 4 years in Thailand i have had problems with my stomach from Bacteria from water and street food. Now i never drink water from the water machines ( my water is delivered in 15L containers @ 15 baht ) and i eat fresh fruit every day washed and sliced by myself! I now also eat " fresh vegetables " every day steamed in my rice cooker and taste absolutely delicious viewers! But i do have " a secret addiction " viewers to 10 baht Ice creams from KFC It's always good to "splash out" at times hey viewers.......?

You mean you can get a train from Naklua to Hua HIn for less than 130 baht return? I know 3rd class is cheap, I didn't realise it was that cheap.

This thread is so way off topic. A bunch of train info can be found here, http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm , but it looks like it missing some links (such as Pattaya).

IsaanUSA you do not seem to know the difference between a thread and a post. I'll give you a clue, the thread IS the topic.

And my post is not off topic at all, canary regularly states that he can do a return train trip to Hua Hin for less than the price of a Starbucks. As he says he is living in Naklua I find this difficult to believe. He would need to be at Pattaya station before 14.20 (in case it is on time) and would be doing well to reach Hua Hin before midnight, this would not give him long to mooch about before getting a return to Bangkok in time for the 06.55 to Pattaya.(or Banglamung if that is more covenient). Incidentally the cost comes to more than a large cup of Starbucks.

Also I do not need to be informed of seat61, having done more rail travel than most on here. Not only within Thailand, but BKK to Singapore numerous times, Southern and East Africa, Europe, and even once New York to San Francisco. In the context of the post what is the point of mentioning seat61 if it does not include Pataya.

Amazing that you can pack so much error into one small post.

Have agood day now.

Just out of curiosity " Bangkok Viewers " ... I wouldn't ever set foot in Starbucks ( not my scene ) i am a bit more " down to earth " ( my nose does not point northwards ) just kidding viewers.......

But how much does a coffee actually cost in a Starbucks in Bangkok anyway ??????

over to you viewers ( Loyd Grossman Voice...)

who can afford the spend the princely sum of $8,000 a year? w00t.gif

Only 105 bht for a Tall Latte, that's very cheap compared to Australia. If you can't afford that then you should go home, period.

Go Home? i don't think i want to travel back to the UK just for a cup of coffee ( well not on my budget anyway...)

So i take it i can just " stroll in " to any Starbucks Coffee shop and relax in the comfortable surroundings with piped music and with free wifi for the whole Morning? I suppose they would include into " The Deal " a slice of cake too? ( i am rather partial to a cake called " Battenberg " - absolutely delicious viewers...)

Now j8k as you seem to " know everything " .... once i have saved up the 105 baht for a cup of this wonderful coffee is there a Starbucks in Bangkok located very high up somewhere in one of the Towers with amazing views?

Thankyou j8k ( most kind ) I have to say that i love Austrailia i was brought up with " Skippy the bush kangaroo " and of course " Sir Les Patterson " ( fabulous )

US$20 per day is my budget exactly. It is tons if spent wisely. I should know because I lives in Pattaya for many years on such a budget. On that budget you will never worry about running out of money. I can live as well on that money as I can at the jobs I have had in america($10 an hour).

Actually that is quite a sensible budget if living in Bangkok and you are like most farang that enjoy a few cool beers on a daily basis.20 Dollars is about 650 baht from memory. My daily budget is 100 baht. But i don't drink or smoke which makes a massive difference and i do not " wolf down " huge Australian Steaks washed down with a bottle of " Bulls Blood " ( red wine ) every night.... Yesterday for example i was out for most of the day ( as per usual ) I bought a whole pineapple from the local market for 10 baht i then later strolled into KFC for one of there delicious 10 baht ice creams ( The lovely lady who sells the ice creams is also rather pleasing to the eye.....) and in the evening i bought a " Chicken Penang Curry " ( large ) for 20 baht with 2 portions of rice for 5 baht. Washed down with 1.5 litres of water ( room temperature ) Out of my 100 baht i also had enough money to buy " the homeless man " ( not myself may i add...) in my soi a meal to....

These international " overpriced " restaurants you see in these shopping malls are busy with the " non adventurous " type of farang. The type of farang that would go to Starbucks and pay over 100 baht for a coffee ( " ridiculous " may i add..) These types will also try to convince the world that Thai food is no good and should therefore never eat food from a market! ( my 20 baht penang curry from my local market i would choose any day to hideous places such as " sizzlers " and other rubbish found in these malls ) also these types of farang that live in Thailand then want to " tell the world " how expensive Thailand is.

Much of Thailand is third world it's ridiculously cheap ( and so is Bangkok !! ) So can you really live in Thailand on 6000 baht a month " All In " ??? You bet you can!

Welcome to the real Thailand .....welcome to my world viewers !!

there are people who spend an average of 7,223 Baht a day "all in". you bet there are! they don't frequent "hideous" places like Starbucks or Sizzlers nor do they eat street food because they prefer to eat at home.

nevertheless they fully agree with you that Thailand is ridiculously cheap thumbsup.gif
