The price of Paradise

Featured Replies

I lived for 4 years at 400m from the beach at Thung Wua Laen.

I did not want to live ON the beach facing the sea and hearing the waves 24h/24.

That was a child's dream, just knowing the beach was a few minute's walk away (or 1 minute motorbike drive)

The house I rented had 6 bedrooms/7 bathrooms and I paid 5.000THB/month.

We'll it just was a concrete structure....

Anyway, 3months of rain and 3 months of winds (not the same months) and a dirty beach got at me after 4 years, dream fulfilled.

In a previous life I had a colleague who travelled 130kmsx2 each day from his beach residence to his workplace, maybe I got that dream from him.

I now live happily 600kms from the sea, no regrets.

Oh Dear OP !!! Another brain wave merchant, as for paradise it is where you have made yourself comfortable to whatever your situation is and where your heart is, simple not that complicated.

If your not happy get the ELL out of there, simple again.

I admit to being somewhat impatient, when I need something fixed, replaced, or just want, I want it fast.

Bangkok is my little paradise, sort of, the little part I have lived in for a long, long time!

No not Downtown, rarely go there, a place for tourists or soulless people!

If you believe you live in paradise, where do you go for a holiday?

Or in "Talking Heads" song, "Paradise is a place where nothing ever happens!"

So we are trading quotes now .....

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.”

Henry Ford

Sort of, but not for one up manship.

I have a beautiful home and family, but at times am bored, need a change. Then when away, I can't wait to get home. Another paradox of paradise.

Get you.

Tad judgmental. Have we met?

Moved to Pub.

why the sea?

this is the view from my balcony.

This is the view in my sala; or indeed anywhere.

Yep.. that's delusion....

I`ll throw in a couple of questions at the OP:

What is the price of living in so-called paradise? Meaning, do we end up giving up more than what we gain?

A nice change from a long monologue we are used to read from you.

Good questions.

Why should I (we royal) gain!

Levels ym, levels.....we are all on different ones....

I think someone hit the nail on the head already; cheap pussy with girls their granddaughters age in many cases. The weather and easy way of life (not so much today) may also have a bearing and perhaps not being accepted where they hail from - misfits. Visas also relatively easy and, as I so often hear, it is 'cheap' to live.

All a bit generic, so why resorts? Because all the above, plus living by the sea...

IMO 'Paradise' is subjective and way overused here... perhaps if it were empty here. Have lived in Phuket and while it still has some fabulous beaches away from the clutter, it is just loaded with dregs. The north of Thailand seems much more laid back than the southern islands. This can't be blamed solely on tourism (though the tourist dollar draws all the local scum in) as the southerners are naturally aggressive.

Agreed about Fijians, wonderful people.

Apologies for the delayed response:

That was meant to be inferred in my post "paying a premium". There of course being more than one way of doing that.

I hate to break this to you but Paradise does not exist. It's about as real as the tooth fairy.

Paradise also means different things to different people. Lots of Thais would think Paradise is being in Harrods with a few million baht to spend.

OK so Paradise does exist then in Harrods. laugh.png

I did intentionally use the word "think". However a Thai's Hell could possibly be being in Harrods potless.

The only place Paradise does exist in the deluded brains of most people.

Well if there's no paradise then there is no hell so OK then I wish you " Peace, prosperity, and happiness ". biggrin.png

John Milton said, " Man can make a hell of heaven or a heaven of hell, in his mind" and that, I think is as true as it gets. I don't live in Paradise but I do live 50 yards from the beach, 5 minutes by bike from work and close to all the amenities that I now take for granted. I am happy with my partner, like my job, have enough salary to do pretty much what i want (but not rich by any stretch) and I live in a beautiful home with views of the sea.

When you write it down I am sure many people would say that sounds like paradise. But it isn't, its just my life. However, and here is the crucial thing; I like my life.I don't want to change it. I am happy. And I think that will do me for now.

Personally I think listening to the I-got-the-world-on-a-string crowd is far more amusing.

Cue the record!

I've got the world on a string

I'm sitting on a rainbow

Got that string around my finger

What a world, what a life - I'm in love

I've got a song that I sing

And I can make the rain go

Any time I move my finger

Lucky me, cant you see - I'm in love

Life's a wonderful thing

As long as I've got that string

I'd be a silly so-and-so

If I should ever let you go

I've got the world on a string

I'm sitting on the rainbow

I've got that string around my finger

Oh, What a world, what a life - I'm in love

How can you, of all people, have the nerve to label ANYBODY as deluded?
