KOH TAO: -- The state prosecutor today ordered the police to look into several unclear issues related to the murder of two British tourists in Koh Tao island before the two murder suspects could be prosecuted in court.

Meanwhile the commissioner of the Royal Thai Police said the police are willing to allow British and Myanmar officials to observe the inquiry of the case by Thai police.

Pol Gen Somyos Phumphanmuang, the commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, assured that he was ready to allow British and Myanmar experts to observe in the probe of the murder in Koh Tao as Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has pledged with the British Premier David Cameron during a recent meeting in Milan.

But he said that the observation would be within the framework of the Thai laws.

UK police arrive to observe murder probe
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- BRITISH POLICE have arrived in Bangkok to observe their Thai counterparts' investigation into the widely publicised murders of two young British backpackers, which led to the arrests of two Myanmar men.

Pol Lt-General Pravut Thawornsiri, spokesman of the National Police, said yesterday that the British team first conferred with officials from their embassy in Bangkok. Later they will meet with the Thai side to learn more details and follow up on the progress police have made so far, he said.

The police inquiry into the deaths of David Miller and Hannah Witheridge met international standards and was unequivocally fair, he said.

British investigators were sent to Thailand after police here were criticised for rushing to solve the case and suggestions that the suspects could be scapegoats.

BANGKOK: -- LOCAL POLICE in Surat Thani province have refused to comment on reports that the Myanmar Embassy and the Justice Ministry are pushing for a fresh investigation into the murders of two British tourists on Koh Tao.

When interviewed yesterday, they only said the national police chief had not ordered that the case be reopened.

In mid-September, two Britons were killed on Koh Tao, in Surat Thani province. The brutal murders made headlines both locally and internationally.

Police have since arrested two Myanmar suspects, who are now in court-approved detention. The suspects, however, now complain that they were forced into admitting to crimes that they had not committed.

The Myanmar Embassy and various other agencies are now trying to deliver assistance to the two men.

At this point, police have concluded the investigation into the case, and public prosecutors are now in the process of reviewing the investigation report.
