BANGKOK: -- Red shirts gathered in huge numbers yesterday at a heavily secured Suvarnabhumi Airport to receive the body of Apiwan Wiriyachai, who died while receiving medical treatment in the Philippines.

Over 2 billion baht allocated for water transportation development

BANGKOK, 11 October 2014 (NNT) – Minister of Transport Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong says that the ministry is preparing to improve water transport infrastructures in line with the Government’s policy.

ACM Prajin stated that the ministry’s corrective approach to water transport problems will focus on water and coastal logistics system in particular, in order to decrease logistic cost to less than 1.75 baht per tonne per kilometre by 2016. If all goes according to plans, shipping volume will increase by 19%, from 15% currently. The improvement will also include the dredging of inland and estuary watercourses.

The water transport infrastructure development project will be implemented during 2014-2017 with a budget of approximately 2,206 million baht. The sum will go to 4 major projects including 782 million baht for coastal harbor development in Laem Chabang, Chonburi, 1,049 million baht for the establishment of a container center also in Laem Chabang, 9 million baht for the study on big harbor management at Krabi and Samui harbors, and 365 million baht for embankment protection along the Pa Sak River.

The Minister also mentioned about the 450-million-baht construction project of 19 harbors along the Chao Phraya River during 2015-2017 to facilitate passenger boat services in Bangkok. He said the new piers will be equipped with modern equipment to ensure commuters’ safety and enable them to connect their journeys with other means of transport such as underground trains and BMTA buses.

ACM Prajin revealed the ministry would carry out additional study on the development of Pakbara Deep Sea Port in Satun province in order to limit the impacts on environment and people’s way of life. The project would include the dredging of navigation channels and berthing areas for safe passage of boats and ships all year round, and building green zones around the seaport such as public park and bicycle lanes.

Trang responds to NCPO’s rubber development scheme

TRANG, 11 October 2014 (NNT) – Governor of Trang Somsak Parisuttho Hemathanon has revealed the progress of a project to provide financial credits to rubber institutions and growers in line with the policy of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) announced on 26 August 2014.

The financial package is divided into three schemes, namely 10,000 million baht as revolving funds for rubber institutions to collect rubber produce, 5,000 million baht as loan credits for rubber processing entrepreneurs, and 15,000 million baht as loan credits for rubber producers. Around 977 million baht will also be appropriated from the central budget to support urgent projects.

On its part, Trang has already approved loans worth 102.9 million baht to 25 rubber cooperatives, out of the 34 applications. The Trang Provincial Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is acting as the center to coordinate the schemes and follow up on their implementation in order to help tackle obstacles and make reports on the schemes’ progress.

King’s temperature returns almost normal and has no pain in surgical wound

BANGKOK: -- The Bureau of the Royal Household stated in its sixth announcement on Saturday that His Majesty's body temperature has mostly returned to normal today.

But only on yesterday afternoon that the King had high temperature.

It said the team of doctors have changed the antibiotics being given to His Majesty via blood vessel, Later his temperature has returned to normal since last night.

The announcement said the team of doctors is satisfied with the King’s recovery from a surgery to remove an infected gallbladder last Sunday.

His Majesty no longer feels pain from the surgical wound when he moves his body, it said.

Princess Chulabhorn leaves hospital to rest in Sattahip palace

BANGKOK: -- The Bureau of the Royal Household issued the sixth announcement stating that Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn has left Vichaiyut Hospital for rest at the Pimanmas Palace in the Sattahip naval base of Chon Buri on Saturday.

It said her doctors reported that the princess still had fever but she was safe to leave hospital. The princess then travelled to the naval base to rest.

The princess was admitted to hospital for stomach inflammation and pancreatitis related to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) on Sept 4.

During her stay at the hospital, ambassadors, government officials, monks and all groups of people expressed concerns about her sickness.

The princess was aware of their concerns and appreciated them, the statement said.

311,000 are jobless in September

BANGKOK: -- The number of jobless for the month of September has increased to 311,000 constituting an increase of 40,000 or 14.76 percent from the same period last year or 24,000 representing an increase of 8.36 percent from August, according to the National Statistical Office.

Of the 311,000 jobless, 156,000 of them have never worked before and 155,000 who used to work but have become redundant. The number of ex-workers have increased by 31,000 or 25 percent and of these, 78,000 are from the production sector, 64,000 from service sector and 13,000 from agricultural sector.

Education wise, the jobless for September are divided into the followings: 103,000 with a Bachelor’s degree from universities; 89,000 with lower secondary educational background: 50,000 with primary education background; 49,000 with upper secondary education and 20,000 without any education.

For the month of September, the number of working population was registered at 38.85 million and, of these, 38.45 are employed and 88,000 seasonal employed. The number of people who are not ready to work who include housewives, students and the aged was registered at 16.08 million.

Mrs Noppawan Chulakanit, managing director of Jobs DB (Thailand) employment agency, said that for the months of August-September 110,000 job applications were posted on the company’s website, representing a decrease of two percent from the same period last year. She identified social science and humanities as the two fields most vulnerable to becoming unemployed because there are so many of them in the labour market.

The most popular jobs for July and August were jobs in sale, customer service and business development.

Dusit Poll: Most people believe the country is heading toward the right direction

BANGKOK: -- Most of the people believe that after the May 22 coup Thailand is heading toward better political direction with major reforms to take place but as many people also are concerned that political conflict still remain, according to Dusit Poll.

Dusit Poll of Rajabhat University’s Suan Dusit campus conducted an opinion survey during October 7-11 among 1,459 respondents who were asked how they thought about Thai political situation today compared to the situation before the coup.

On the question of the post-coup political situation, 87.05 percent of the respondents said they believe the country is heading toward better direction as there will be major reforms; 84.24 percent said political conflict still remain unresolved and 64.08 percent said the government is determined to resolve the country’s problems.

On the question of pre-coup political situation compared to the post-coup situation, 73.54 percent admitted the situation has improved with less conflict and no political protests; 20.70 percent said situation remains unchanged as no one will be able to resolve the conflict and 5.76 percent thought the situation has worsened.

As for economic situation before and after the coup, 42.43 percent said the situation remains unchanged as the economy is experiencing a slowdown and people have become more careful in their spending; 40.16 percent thought the situation has improved because political situation has become more stable; 17.41 percent thought the economic situation has worsened as cost of living has risen while income remains unchanged and also debt problem.

Regarding social situation before and after the coup, 59.43 percent though the situation has improved as more people have become aware of public interests and want to see peace being restored; 30.29 percent said nothing has changed while 10.28 percent believed the situation has worsened as people have become more self-interested and lack social consciousness.
