BANGKOK, Oct 13 -- As the political situation in the country has improved, Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul projects that the number of tourists during calendar 2014 would reach 24.9 million persons while the country would earn at least Bt1.85 trillion.

Of the total tourists, revenue from foreigners visiting the country would be about Bt1.16 trillion, down slightly from last year, and the rest from domestic tourism, said Ms Kobkarn.

In order to encourage people to travel the country by bicycle in line with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s policy wishing to see people have good health, Ms Kobkarn said plans have been made to build bicycle lanes nationwide.

Also, the government is encouraging Thais people to celebrate the upcoming five-day New Year holiday, starting December 31, by travelling within Thailand instead of touring abroad, she added. (MCOT online news)

I'm sure the revenue will triple that once the "martial law tourism" kicks off.....and not to mention the tour de france soon to be held in thailand......and the F1

Plus everybody is "Ebola proof" since Thailand has the cure..

Easy to predict since no one can ever know how much any tourist spends and no one will question the Thai Government. They might as well say 3 trillion.

"Ms Kobkarn said plans have been made to build bicycle lanes nationwide".

I wonder if any plans have been made to stop people driving or parking in the bicycle lanes?

Are their often repeated and ridiculous claims the reason every Thai man and his dog build a bar or guesthouse in Phuket and other tourist areas only to promptly go broke because the numbers never add up to reality.

So hotel occupancy rates in Bangkok have spent most of the year at record lows, yet revenue barely changes?

Who believes this nonsense?

It's not the number of tourists that's important but the per capita that they spend and the strength of the baht. If the baht continues to weaken against major foreign currencies, that will provide an incentive for increased tourism. But on the flip side the higher resulting domestic revenues don't really benefit the economy if inflation creates greater domestic debt. Thailand needs a tourist economy like Singapore, Japan, and Taiwan where high quality products and services can be purchased with failry-priced currencies.

There's a bicycle lane right on front of my office building. And then there's a sign next to it that says metered taxis are allowed to park by the roadside/kerb between 1300 - 1500 hrs. Comments, General Sir?

I would be happy to see the baht weaken, so far the aussie dollar has lost about 2 cents since early Sept

(TT rate 29.75 5th Sept Bkk bank) I've only seen the USD strengthening

And the General does it again. Gets mentioned in dispatches?

But this idea of bicycle riding is there a sinister motive behind it?

No bikini’s, eat more rice and ride a bike; sounds a bit 1950's?

So according to these predictions foreign tourism will only be down 7% from last years 26.7 million visitors but the revenue will somehow now grow to 9% of the GDP from 7% last year... Is the Tourism and Sports Minister sure they are looking at the numbers for Thailand and not some other country?!

In order to encourage people to travel the country by bicycle...

Once again, YMBFJ:

Thai truck driver who knocked down and killed British couple fined just £18

I was finally knocked off my bike in Chiang Mai but it was to be expected. Cars have no consideration for small motorcycles and especially bikes.

In Germany where they have very good bike lanes, the law says any accident involving a bike is automatically the car drivers fault. They probably would loose their licence though.

What are those black and white lines supposed to do. I've tired crossing with my bike only to find cars whizzing past me on both sides at high speed missing me by inches.I gave up biking after my inevitable accident.
