when doing business, you have to here.

it's all about apearance.

In the begining i came to a deal, knowing i was richer than the people i deal with, but didnt look like it, and what do you guess. They didn't respect me enough to see me as the one funding everything. although i did.

Only having expensive clothes and a car will do. No gold and all, but to get in with the high society thai, you at least need to look like you got it all i guess.

i don't care much about this, but they do so if it is their business i want i have little options

your spelling and grammar makes me think this is a work of fiction. :)

One can be seen as flaunting his wealth in the eyes of some, while in the eyes of others he can be seen as very low profile.

It depends on one's own perspective and background...

I guess I must be flaunting my wealth...

I like expensive cars, prefer Breguet or Bulgari watches than Tissot, love to wear Zegna suits, fit better in Boss jeans rather than Levi's, always have the latest smartphone(s), share my boat with my friends, do charity projects as a hobby, fly business class only when no first class is available, tip generously, ..., ..., ...

Farangs must think i flaunt... Or am I just enjoying life?

Flaunting or enjoying, do as you wish, but safely. Who cares what others think... (Never had a problem, by the way).

It's not really about what others think or about trying to impress. It's about whether it's a smart thing to do when visiting or touring or out & about in Thailand. "Smart thing to do" as in safe in terms of attracting unwanted attention from the criminal element, including teens on motorbikes, pickpockets, and all other manner of potential thief. Maybe you're never anywhere but business meetings, expensive restaurants, upscale shopping malls, and high-end resorts. One answer for you. Maybe another answer for typical tourists spending their time in street markets, busy urban sidewalks and tourist attractions. That'd be a different answer. Maybe another answer for the night crowd. Whatever - it's just chit-chat. Totally up to you whether you want to follow anyone else's advice or not. And I don't really think anyone here is much impressed with your particular lifestyle. If showing off your wealth is a source of pleasure for you, then by all means go for it. It's not a crime. You're not hurting anybody.

The people wearing gold and flaunting wealth are really the poor people, low class. They do it to make others think they are better off. It's a self esteem booster. People that have wealth don't flaunt it. They don't need to. Most wealthy people are really low key about it, that's how they protect it. Poor souls flaunting wealth usually have much debt.

As a general rule, the more money you show, the more money you'll be expected to spend to maintain the same level of relationship with Thai people. So if you enjoy throwing money around, by all means flaunt your wealth, otherwise you're better off with the humble approach - you'll attract better type of friends.

Who really is at fault?

The person who flaunts his money or the people who were attracted by it?

A person who flaunts his money is generally a bit sick in his grey matter... IMHO

Still not clear what "flaunting" is exactly.

--A rich guy who likes to give away money to charity and the less fortunate. Flaunting?

--Buying an expensive car. Flaunting?

--Eating in an expensive restaurant. Flaunting?

--Flying first class. Flaunting?

--Wearing expensive jewelry, watches, whatever. Flaunting?

--Sending kids to an expensive school/university. Flaunting?

--Owning anything remotely expensive. Flaunting?

It almost sounds like the OP is saying that if you have money, don't spend it...or at least spend it in a way that he doesn't find out about it.

A matter of interpretation, I guess.

My experience with very rich people is that if they can hide it, they do. Famous rich people can't hide it and we know who they are.

But a guy who's loaded but not famous will probably opt for more ordinary friends. Sam Walton of Walmart certainly did, even after he was famous.

If you look too wealthy, ordinary people won't be comfortable around you. You couldn't pal around with them because you wouldn't fit in.

Think of ranchers in the Western US. They may own thousands of acres of land and a thousand head of cattle and countless dollars worth of equipment. It was probably inherited and they probably own it outright. Yet when you see them they are in a dusty pickup wearing denim jeans, boots and a cowboy hat. If they put on a suit and drove a Rolls Royce to town they wouldn't fit in with the other ranchers in the coffee shop.

One of the richest guys I ever knew has passed on now, but he was a simple machinist who invented a revolutionary Pump. He made hundreds of millions of dollars but he never stopped looking like a machinist and he still loved to go into the big factory he built with cash from his profits and try to make something else.

It was simply who and what he was.

I don't think it's wise anywhere in the world, no benefit can come of it.

People with real wealth seldom - if ever flaunt it.....and usually live in areas where everyone else is on par with one another.....

What is real wealth?

What is flaunt wealth?

Recently I was at a Hugo Boss store.

There was a farang who had bought a few socks or small things like that.

He was paying cash for his socks.

I could not avoid seeing him take a bundle of cash (a small one) out of his pocket, making sure that everyone saw it, and counting the money noisily like a bank teller.

To me this was a cheap guy trying to show he had a bit of money, but others may have said that he was flaunting his wealth...

Wealth or flaunting it is a question of perspective...

Wealth or flaunting it is a question of perspective...

Posts like this are entirely missing the point of this thread. Go back and read the OT. Flaunting one's wealth, in the context of this thread, is about the wisdom of dangling bait in front of potential Thai street thieves, e.g., pickpockets & motorbike snatchers. To do or not to do. That's the question. It's not about mysterious metaphysical psycho-social theories examining the meaning of life and one's divine right to pursue happiness...

'Not out to suppress anyone's opinions, but it's all off-topic. The only "perspectives" that would seem relevant are those of the thieves. It's ABOUT whether or not you think it constitutes enough of a temptation to thieves in Thailand, and enough of a risk, to not do it. Maybe "flaunting" was the wrong word to use as it's kind of a loaded term; maybe "Displaying Your Wealth is it Wise?" would've been better.

It's NOT hard to find reports of gold necklaces being snatched right off the (foreign) wearer's neck in different places in Thailand, for example. Other theft as well. It does make you wonder why, if you know that can happen, you would take the chance. It doesn't seem "wise" to me, but is there some deep hidden wisdom to it? Does it impress restaurant waiters or taxi drivers or hotel receptionists or traffic cops or something?

What does it prove, you got money, usually wealth displayed is only for show, not really wealthy, My wife friend who is Thai lives in England ,Is married to a multimillionaire. Never talks about money and you would never know, apart from when she turns up in her Rolls Royce.

Many on this forum would say that she is "flaunting her wealth" :)

Not you, nor me, ... but many others ;)

I doubt having a gold chain flaunts your wealth, unless that is all you have. I have always been amused by what I call the "Sailor Syndrome." Many people on vacation display it, so do many soldiers and sailors, and many off-shore workers--you know, spending lavishly, as if they really have money; then going back to their menial jobs, pinching pennies until they amass more money for their next 'rich trip'. Perhaps that is a major cause for many in Thailand, and in other less-developed countries, to think all Westerners are rich.

Very well put...I explained that concept to my wife many years ago. That most foreigners who come here for holidays do not have the money thatthey seem to have, and they do not live at home in the same manner they do here. They save up for the holiday, come here and throw money around, and go home, to do it all over again...or not.

How would I know?

You said it, so I trust you :)

If she drives herself I hope she drives a Wraith... Not a 4 doors. That would look out of place ;)
