Sven expects departures

Eriksson fires warning to fringe players

Sven Goran Eriksson has admitted that a number of players are likely to leave Manchester City this week.

The likes of Darius Vassell, Georgios Samaras and Bernado Corradi have not figured in Eriksson's plans at the start of the season.

The Swede has told some of his fringe players they will not play regularly if they stay at City, and has advised them to secure moves away before the transfer window closes on Friday.

"A few players are in negotiations with other clubs with our permission," Eriksson explained.

"There are a lot of rumours not just of Darius Vassell going but some of the others.

"There are others who will leave, we will see over the next few days.

"We have a few players, three or four, who are in discussions with other clubs. I am sure something will happen.

"You have to be fair and tell them that they will not play much football if they stay here.

"It is professional and correct to tell them now rather than at Christmas time."

The likes of Adriano and Nuno Gomes have been linked with moves to City and Eriksson has confirmed he is determined to bring in more new faces.

He said: "We are working hard on transfers. Something will happen but Friday is very close.

"I will not comment on names that have been suggested, we will see on Friday."

I watched the U21 last night with our 3 playing (goalie, Nedum and Johnson).

Bred,

Do you know if young Kasper eligible (or could be eligible) to play for England? Been here for a while now and should be entitled to british citizenship (if he wanted)!!

Today's news: The FA are checking out a shock move to persuade Manchester City keeper Kasper Schmeichel to ditch his dad's Danish roots and play for England.

Well it looks like his dad has put his foot down.

From sky:-

No Schmeichel for England

Manchester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel will not play for England, according to his father.

Schmeichel has impressed for City this year and let in only his first goal of the season in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, but the shot-stopper's famous father Peter has ruled out the possibility of his son featuring for England.

The 20-year-old has played for Denmark's Under 21s and his father insists this is where his future lies, despite rumours suggesting Kasper would be eligible to represent England at international level.

"Kasper is Danish," said Peter Schmeichel, who made his name at City's Manchester rivals United.

"He has absolutely no chance of playing for England and the discussion should stop now.

"England is for English people, Kasper was born Danish, all his family is Danish and there is nothing that can make him English.

"If you ask him he says 'I'm Danish and I play for Denmark'."

From skysports:-

Skysports.com understands several English clubs are set to step up their interest in Benfica ace Nuno Gomes.

Middlesbrough, Manchester City and Wigan are all battling it out to sign the Portugual international and they are ready to firm up their interest before the transfer window slams shut on Friday.

All three clubs are in the market for a new striker and they have been alerted to Gomes' possible availability.

Benfica claim they do not want to lose Gomes, but their stance could change if the Portuguese giants fail to qualify for the lucrative group stages of the UEFA Champions League this week.

Should Benfica crash out to FC Copenhagen, Benfica could be forced to cash-in on the former Fiorentina ace.

Gomes' English suitors are believed to be travelling to Copehagen on Wednesday to cast an eye over the talented hit-man.

The 31-year-old is thought to be keen on a move to England and Benfica could sanction a move if they receive the right deal for Gomes.

Gomes' UK representative Phil McTaggart confirmed a number of clubs were chasing the forward ahead of the close of the transfer window.

"There has been a lot of interest in Nuno," McTaggart told skysports.com.

"He is quality player who has played at the highest level all his career for club and country.

"He would be a good addition for any team as he has always scored goals, but it all depends on Benfica.

"We will wait and see what happens in the next few days."

Good news, just need Micah to sign now.

From skysports:-

Johnson nets new City deal

Michael Johnson has capped a dream start to the season by signing a new four-year deal at Manchester City.

While Sven Goran Eriksson's tenure at Eastlands has coincided with a wave of arrivals from foreign shores, one Englishman, Johnson, has benefited greatly from the Swede's appointment.

Installed as the heartbeat of the club's new-look midfield, Johnson has manfully filled the void left by Joey Barton's move to Newcastle.

Johnson scored his first senior goal for City in the club's second game of the season, a 1-0 home win over Derby, and now he can look forward to a prolonged spell in sky blue.

In other news, 19-year-old defender Shaleum Logan has been rewarded for some promising displays in pre-season with a three-year contract.

Speaking of the double deal, City chief executive Alistair Mackintosh confirmed his delight at securing the services of two young players of considerable promise.

"In awarding new contracts to Michael and Shaleum we are once again demonstrating Manchester City's commitment to investing in our young, home-grown players," he told the club's official website.

"With a spine of hugely talented Academy-bred youngsters we have made an excellent start to the season and are delighted to have secured the long-term futures of both players at this football club."

Bristol City 1-2 Man City

Rolando Bianchi scored a superb winner to book Manchester City's place in the third round of the Carling Cup. The visitors, who made eight changes from Saturday's defeat at Arsenal, were well on top in the early stages.

Emile Mpenza put the Blues ahead with a powerful finish and Bianchi saw another goalbound effort deflected over.

Bristol City were much improved after the break and Bradley Orr levelled from close range before Bianchi drilled home from the edge of the box to settle it.

Edit// here was the line up:-

Hart, Jihai, Corluka, Onuoha, Ball, Logan, Ireland, Gelson, Geovanni (Dabo 82), Mpenza, Bianchi (Dickov 89).

Subs Not Used: Schmeichel, Mills, Laird.

So many false dawns. I hope City do well from now on...must be some of the longest suffering supporters out there starved of relative success. I was hoping somebody else would've taken over, but, what's the difference from Tks compared to some multi billionaire Russian who made his money when his country was in Chaos.

Thai star to join Manchester City

From correspondents in Bangkok, Thailand

August 30, 2007

A THAI football star will join Manchester City, owned by the kingdom's ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, becoming the first Thai to play in the Premier League, Thaksin's lawyer said.

Suree Sukha, a 25-year-old defender, was chosen from three Thai players who were on a two-week trial, said Noppadon Pattama.

"Suree will be the first Thai player to play in the Premier League. His work permit is now being processed," the lawyer told reporters.

It HAD to happen didn't it? Even if he's crap it had to happen. TKS will take every opportunity to kep himself in the news over here. Sven's no mug..he would have spotted this bloke long before now or at least someone would have.

Sorry, but for me it's a huge publicity stunt to get the spotlight in LOS. :o

Suree is the best player of AFC cup 2007 . He deserved it

Sorry Tytus, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this.

He is not good enough, and I doubt that he will play many games if any for the first eleven. One wonders how he will be able to obtain a work permit, when a truly international class player such as Yakubu had difficulties.

As I have said before, and as Chavy has reiterated, this is a cheap publicity stunt which has been foisted upon Man City by Thaksin. I hope that I'm forced to eat my words and that he is succesful, but I reckon he will not be in the English game by the start of next season.

I know what you mean guys but this is a business and if this brings in more revenue, then so be it. City have lived in the shadows of United for decades, due to their superior PR and marketing skills of what is the brand "Manchester United". About time we did something too.

P.S. I have also heard this guy is good but we'll wait and see.

I've seen him play about 4 times, and I think he is a pretty reasonable player, but certainly not up to the level of the EPL. Whatever, he will certainly benefit from his experience, and I hope that he shows a little better attitude than some of the previous prima donna Thai players who have gone over to the UK have faired. He's going to find it pretty hard and unforgiving, and I wouldn't be suprised if he get's loaned out first to another club outside of the UK, if they have WP problems.

Totally agree with you on the basis of PR, it is a business, and I am sure that by just having him involved there it will increase the fan base for City, which may be good for City revenues, although with all the fake gear available here in Thailand that may be open to debate. Cerrainly, players from Asia are extremelly marketable, and United have benefited from having Park and Dong at United, although Park is defianately a proven international class player. Not sure about Dong, although Ferguson appears to have great faith in him.

I really do wish the player the best of luck, although I remain a very cynical sceptic of this whole thing. :o

To say this is a publicity stunt is to ignore the fact that City have very limited cover at the back.I don't know how good he is but maybe he will make a good squad player & that is just what we need for the centre of defence.

OK, seriously how many games will he play this season? I will stick my nexk out on the line and say zero. There are better players in the Championship and City reserves. Sorry, I'm not going to buy into this BS.

Suree permit denied

Tor Chittinand

Suree Sukha's dream of becoming a Manchester City player has been put on hold after his application for a work permit was rejected by the British government.

The Thai defender said yesterday he was informed by the club that the Home Office did not approve his application for a work permit because Thailand were outside the top 70 in the Fifa rankings.

According to the Home Office, to be eligible for a work permit, a player must have played for his country in at least 75% of its competitive A team matches during the two years preceding the date of the application.

The player's country must be at or above 70th place in the official Fifa world rankings when averaged over the two years preceding the date of the application.

Thailand are currently 109th.

However, Suree, 25, has not given up his hopes of playing in the Premier League. He said City may be able to find a way to solve the problem.

"Man City will talk to the British government and re-submit my application," he said.

Although the transfer window closed yesterday, Suree said this should not be a problem because he is now a player without a club.

Suree said he would continue training with Man City and would return to Thailand on September 17 to train with the Thai national team for a World Cup qualifier against Macau next month.

Suree and two other Thai players defender Kiatprawut Saiwaew and striker Teerasil Dangda are on trial with the English club owned by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The Thai defender said yesterday he was informed by the club that the Home Office did not approve his application for a work permit because Thailand were outside the top 70 in the Fifa rankings.

Well City could have saved themselves the bother if they had consulted our resident Visa expert. Below are what the Scouser said about this, over 3 weeks ago :o

As for the work permit, in the main it never seems to be an issue with footballers. JiHai Sun (China i would rate the same as Thailand near enough) has got one and so have many other players in other teams. But our very own Scouser might be able to clarify the situation on that (and even offer his services to City) :D

I don't think City's Thai players will get work permits. They have to have played in at least 75% of their country's "A" team matches for which they've been available for selection and that country needs to have averaged 70 or above in the FIFA rankings for the previous two years.

Scouse.

There is a panel that they can plead their case to, but you do have to show that the player is top-notch and can't help that he comes from a lowly-ranked footballing country.

Failing that, and this is stretching it a bit, they could apply as students and they could work up to 20 hours per week, but they would otherwise have to attend at least 15 hours of classroom study per week. Failing, failing that, there's no objection to them coming over as visitors and training with the squad, but they wouldn't be able to sign a contract, couldn't be paid in the U.K., and would not be available for selection. They'd also have to go home after 6 months.

Scouse.

Last night i thought was Garrido's first bad game, Elano looks lightweight and a passenger sometimes and he's been rumbled, but Petrov hasn't impressed me at all - he looks to have one pace, billy whiz, and ends up over running the ball all the time.

I'm worried who are forwards are, seems to be Bianchi and Mpenza as just about everybody else is on loan!

More Arrest Warrants Issued For Shinawatra

Tuesday 4th September 2007

He's a fit and proper person don't you know!

The Times reports:

'The controversy surrounding Thaksin Shinawatra, the Manchester City owner, deepened yesterday when another set of warrants were issued for the arrest of the former Prime Minister of Thailand and his wife.

'The warrants were issued in relation to a police inquiry into the couple's alleged violation of stock-trading laws, according to investigators for the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) in Thailand.

'Only three weeks ago, Thailand's Supreme Court issued warrants for the arrest of Thaksin and Potjaman, his wife, after they failed to return home to answer charges of abuse of power over a 772 million baht (about £12 million) land deal.

'The DSI has been investigating allegations that Thaksin and his wife violated Thailand's Securities and Exchange Act by concealing assets through a company, SC Assets Co, and said that warrants were sought after the couple repeatedly failed to appear in Bangkok to hear the charges. "The court approved an arrest warrant," Pornchai Asavawattanaporn, of the DSI, said yesterday.

'Under Part 2 of the Extradition Act 2003, the Thai Embassy in London could seek the help of the Home Office if Thaksin refuses to return to his homeland, but, given that the present Thai Government was not democratically elected, it would appear unlikely that the Government here would assist in any extradition request.'

Thailand coach convinced Man City serious about Thai talent

September 09, 2007

Thailand coach Chanvit Pholchivin says Manchester City will soon boast Thai players.

Forward Teerasil Daengda, central defender Kiatprawut Saiwaeo and right back Suree Sukha all had recent trials at City and were accompanied to England by Pholchivin.

City were prepared to sign Sukha, but work permit problems thwarted the move.

Pholchivin told The Nation: "All three performed well, not just Suree. However, they considered Suree had a better chance to get into the senior team on the ground of his form and the fact that he was selected as a member of the Asian Cup best eleven in the group stage in July."

Chanvit dismissed the suggestion that Thai players received special treatment during their stay in Manchester and the contract was offered mainly because of the fact that the club owner was a Thai.

"Many see the trial as a privilege but I would say it's an opportunity that the former premier gave to Thai football. Although he could arrange this for us, it was (Sven Goran) Eriksson who has the final say on the issue," he added.
