Have private insurance. Do I still need to buy the Government insurance?

That was quick... Maybe there should just be a question answer portion here where you can just ask a quick question and get a quick, 1 line answer.. Or better yet maybe someone could have a FAQ page with all the one line questions already there for reference, think anyone would refer to it though? coffee1.gif

The ability to vote answers up would be useful.. at least then others wanting to know the answer wouldn't sometime have to trawl through dozens of aimless or incorrect posts and try to figure out which answer was correct ;)

Yes, you still need the government insurance.

Check your policy, some are government insurance inclusive (ours is not, it says so).

My first class insurance company issues both - separate premiums - a one page document showing government insurance (required to be shown at Land Transport Office when you pay your annual road tax and get sticker for your windscreen) and a multi-page policy for the first class insurance.

The Government insurance is compulsory but do make sure that it is clearly noted in your policy and coverage documents. As mentioned earlier, it is usually a separate cover note but some carriers will issue a single 'all-inclusive' cover note with the compulsory insurance included.

I think you will find that the government and the voluntary insurance are totally separate and not combined. Can be bought together, but 2 separate policies with separate premiums. There is no "No Claims Bonus" on the government insurance.

Not exactly what I had in mind, there's way too many here who aren't as well endowed on the topics as they like to think and merely go with the crowd regardless in spite of other correct advice given.. It then becomes more about a popularity contest and less about knowledge, there's already way too much of that as it stands, but if the first answer is obviously the correct one then that can pretty much stop the thread in it's tracks and the question could be posted accordingly and easily referenced to avoid so many redundant threads and answers.

The "government" insurance is a compulsory cover and can be purchased from the private insurance company of your choice.

In fact I was not aware the government itself sold this.

Most private policies would include the compulsory plus additional. The compulsory is usually clearly shown as a separate line or page in the policy, at least it is in mine.

Yes, everyone has to have the compulsory insurance, but where I live many don't bother, don't bother about anything sad.png .

When I do my yearly Class 1 insurance they ASK if I would like them to take care of the compulsory cover too. I answer yes.

The two insurances arrive by post together, both look very similar but the compulsory one (600+ bht) has a tear off section for the tax folk.

the insurance would need to be classed as 'No named driver'.

This insurances the vehicle no matter who is driving it (though perhaps they need a license, that isn't as strict here as it is in the West, but you have on anyway).

K-Bank have an okay PA Insurance on their Debit Cards.

Look at getting full coverage for the vehicle. No Named Driver. First Class cover which will include bail bond etc.

Whether the ride is used or not you must pay road tax, you cannot get road tax without the compulsory insurance. "You" must have your own first class insurance to cover ALL costs if an accident occurs, otherwise YOU may have a big financial problem.

I have full comprehensive insurance and among the documents sent by the insurance company there is a page which covers the government insurance.

The government compulsory insurance covers for body injury only not car repairs and it covers up to fifteen thousand baht only, I have first class private insurance too but it only kicks in after the fifteen thousand is exhausted on one claim. Yes my private ins company will do the leg work for the government policy but costs me a hundred baht and well worth it.
