More than 10,000 digital TV vouchers to be redeemed

BANGKOK: -- More than 10,000 digital-TV vouchers were expected to be used for a purchase on their first day of redemption, with a Bt690 set-top box set, including an antenna and cables, the apparent favourite choice.

Takorn Tantasit, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, said yesterday that most of the redeemed coupons were in Greater Bangkok at leading retail stores registered with the NBTC.

Some people used the coupon to get a discount on a high-quality digital TV set or smart IDTV (integrated digital television).

Kudatara Nagaviroj, executive adviser for corporate affairs for Big C Supercenter, expects that 60 per cent of the shoppers for a digital TV package at Big C stores with a voucher would use it for a complete digital TV receiver set, valued at Bt690.

The remaining 20 per cent would use the vouchers as partial payment for a high-end digital TV or IDTV set.

Takorn reminded those who had not yet used their vouchers that they would expire in six months from the date of issue. The registered redemption centres include major retailers such as 7-Eleven, Tesco Lotus and Big C.

The NBTC has sent out 4.6 million of the Bt690 vouchers to 21 provinces through Thailand Post's network.

About 3.8 million of the vouchers have been received by households, while the rest were still on their way yesterday.
