New freeway sign in the USA

I went to 2 wed nite races (beat the heat) You can race against the polices best units{which suck at best}) & out of the 4 Harleys none even got close to the finish line on the 1/4 mile at Sears Point Raceway. The best time was over 17 seconds on a sportster. The bike raced against a 1988 ford Thunderbird (grampas old car) The ford posted a 17 second Hideous for 1/4 mile & the sporty was loligagin behind him. I don't know why Harley even bother to race that big ass set of pistons are the downfall of the bike. A total waste of efficiency.

The V rods are much better although they get killed by any of the Jap bikes. They are still quite a bit behind the times but are slowly getting a clue. A buddy has one of the newer 750 v rod & my 650 Kawi would smoke it easily on the 1/4 mile. But at least they look a lot cooler & more modern than the old school Harleys. They have to the old farts are dyin off & the younger crowd are way more into style over weight & status.

It looks beautiful & shiny cause it is new . But I didn't have time to ride it But Rod told me it wasn't the fastest of bikes but a lot better than the sporty he had 10 years ago.One of his friends have a 650 ninja & he said he can't keep up with it after 110 MPH it starts to shake & shutter. Not surprising sounds like a typical Harley. I've had Harleys before & no big excitement, if they could put an inline 4 & shave off 200 lbs they would be good bikes. But for turning for a profit not bad in the states cause you can get some great deals now that everyone is tapped out & needs money. The other half will hock their left nut to get a Harley. Don't understand the logic, but then again I never understand the lack of logic. He traded a Bobcat & cash for less than the owner got it for.Knowing Rod It was for a LOT less.

If that Sportster could not do better than 17 seconds the rider did not have a clue.

I had a sporty those bikes don't move worth a shit but mine did 14 seconds in the quarter. I hated the sheer slowness of the bike my 500 Honda four would beat it in the 1/4 mile easy. way to much metal & the set up is not condusive for racing whatsoever. I don't believe sears point in Sonoma Ca. has ever seen a Harley win anything. They are all show & no go

A Sportster (or any other stock, street Harley-Davidson) is surely not a performance machine. But any competent rider could make a 14-second pass on any of them.

Yea but why screw around with an over 10 second bike when you can get an efficient machine (that is soooo much more comfortable) that will do 8 seconds or less.

If your into the Old Fart status a Harley for real riding excitement just about anything else.If they got rid of those huge ass pistons or just rip out the engine & put a 327 on the frame the slug issue would be solved. But I have to say Harley is always the last to get with the modern program. It took almost 60 years to come up with anything that will remotely keep up with a Japanese bike. Too much infighting at the Harley plant as the fan base is dying or getting to old to hold up the bikes. Very few now want a Harley as they just haven't kept up with the times. They should have seen the writing on the wall in the 80's & converted all the creature comforts w/engine redesign to be competitive. Sad for the company that they resisted change since we all get older & it is far easier to ride a light ultrafast bike over a slow on the road bike that could be a car. Even my Goldwing was way more comfortable than my friends full dress roadking & My Goldwing got way better mileage & required ONLY interval maintenance. Not really Anti Harley since I have owned them - But I don't want status from any bike just enjoyment without having to work on the ride unless I am doing mods on it.

Beardog, you are so intent on Harley-bashing that you missed my point...or chose to ignore it.

I clearly stated my position that no street Harley is a performance machine....I will add, by any stretch of the imagination.

My point was, any Harley that is running decently, with a competent rider, will do better than 17 seconds in the 1/4 mile. That is all I said; I made no statement about value, quality, desirability vs any other motorcycle, or anything else.

I have owned three different Harleys (all pre-1986), including one Sportster. *None* were a performance bike, by any stretch of the imagination, but I have no doubt that any of them would run in the 14s on the 1/4 mile. That is not hard to do on a motorcycle.

8 seconds (or less)? Not without quite a bit of modification and a great rider. The current best time was set by Ricky Gadson, who ran 9.25@151mph on a stock ZX-14R (it may have been strapped or lowered) and he's one of the best motorcycle drag racers in the business- I might be able to run a high nine on mine, but it would take a lot of practice and many runs. Guys running eights on street-legal bikes usually have extended swingarms and many other mods.

There are several bikes that are capable of running nines (most literbikes, i.e.), but there aren't many riders who could hit that time. Maybe the new H2 will be first stock bike to hit eights.

The quicker HDs (aside from the VRod, which can run 11s) can hit mid 13s, which is about what you'd get out of a somewhat fast car.

You got me there the bikes 8 seconds or less are all highly modified NHRA circuit race bikes Even the old Kawasaki h2 750 models have wheelie bars on them as you would have to be a fool to jump on a 12 second H2 without the bars. But here is a list of Non modified bikes that hit 9-11 sec.

Notes
By quarter mile time, 12 seconds or less

Time from standing start to 1⁄4-mile (0.40 km). This list includes full production motorcycles only; concept and "one-off" motorcycles of any kind are not included.
For comparison, an object in free fall (without any air resistance) near the Earth's surface has a quarter mile time of 9.06 seconds and a speed of 198.7 mph.

You can see Harley only has one contender that did 11.38 sec @ 119.07 mph (191.62 km/h)[1]

At 120 mph Not exactly the fastest speed. But to its credit it did it fast. But a stock Harley to me is way more a status symbol than a shit hot bike. Maybe I am jaded but for the money you have to dish out you can get a Mo Betta sportsbike! That & you rarely ever find sport bikes cruisin 50-60 MPH. Boring! My 48 Panhead was my fastest Harley although I never dragged it on the 1/4 mile I would not say it was the fastest or smoothest but I have had Harleys & the post is about making fun of Harleys being a little on the slower side. Pound for pound My H2 was way more fun & would get up & hoof but that is comparing oranges to horses. The new Ninja Race version that Kawasaki put together will probably turn 8 or damn close to it stock.

Just sayin Harleys are really not in the game for racing. every company outpaces them By quite a bit.
