rent a motorbike/car, find the area you want to live in

ride around and look for signs

stop in the mini marts and ask the locals

you do not need an agent/classifieds

I've used ddproperty.com elsewhere in Thailand with great success - never lived in Phuket but looks like they have good coverage - over 1250 properties for rent

The hunt around yourself where you want to live method is the best. Maybe get a list of places from the above references. The vast majority of places aren't listed anywhere.
