BMA continues effort to reorganize street vendors

BANGKOK, 24 October 2014 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is pushing ahead with plans to re-organize street vendors in the capital.

The BMA has made known that vendors who have been asked to relocate from their premises will be able to occupy new areas in Talat Phlu, Ratburana, Tevarat and Thonburi markets. Space has been allocated for 400 vendors who can lease the area by a monthly or daily rate.

The City Hall is currently overseeing a number of markets around Bangkok including Singha, Nongchok and Arun-Amarin markets. Random food tests have been conducted every month to ensure the quality of fresh food sold at each premises. If food sold at any of the market is found to be contaminated with bacteria or dangerous chemicals, the vendor will have the contract revoked.

The BMA recently claimed success at reducing the number of illegal vendors around Ratchadamnoen and Ramkamhaeng and has announced new plans submitted by the Association of Siamese Architects (ASA) to better pedestrianize Chit Lom and Rathchaprasong.

For sure this is long overdue. Love seeing many vendors off of Sukhumvit Rd.

Still think Soi 11 is a deathtrap with vendors taking over sidewalks and forcing tourists into the streets.

I'd like to see all the vendors off of Sukhumvit Soi 3-15...day and night. Cleaner the streets are, the better

IMHO.

I wonder where all these sellers are going to work now ?

What about the Deaf sellers along Sukhumvit ?

I think there was a middle ground with sellers on one side of the sidewalk only

But doing health checks is a good thing ,

can they check the big rats too and see how healthy they are eating the scraps thrown into the gutter ?

I know that we as Farang aka foreigners really feel we have a say on what goes on here however,

as much as I myself as a senior find it better when the Sukhumvit area where I am located is much

easier to get around during the day, or prior to 7pm when they are back on the streets, except those that

seem to have access all the time like Kamagra and DVD's etc,

I am told by my wife that we have inlaws that make there living selling on the streets

and I had friends who also made there living in NYC selling items on the street

and some disabled vets in NY worked the street fairs to survive so

I have feelings for those that do not have Social Security or retirement or even

medical Insurance here and are trying to raise their children and take care of their parents

and grand parents.

One thing about Soi 11 right before Villa Market that I have not understood in the nine years here, they have two old beat up pay phones that I have never seen anyone use in the LOS here and you must either wait for the people coming past that or walk into oncoming traffic?

Now that is something either some wise guy owns or the people in the area are making some money

on?

Anyway just food for thought and thanks for the info and topic and feedback. No offense to your desire to clean the streets and make life easier to get around and maybe something else to think about across from soi 11 is Soi 8 and it seems all the food vendors in that area throw their food trash in two garbage bins but after 6 pm that is about ten black trash bags with many rats feeding on that spot. There is a Tailor shop or actually one after another with the employees sit outside and try and get farang to buy suits etc and I ask them why not complain about the rats and they just laugh.

Cheers to all

There have been lines marking off their allowed area for years, but for almost as many years they have encroached over that line, and set up stalls on the other side of the footpath as well. So I reckon they have only themselves to blame !

If the shop owners were forced to rent shop houses at reasonable rents, instead of the extortionate amounts they currently charge, the locals wouldn't have to sell their wares on the side of the street.
