Hello there,

My father had a stroke last week and he requires a surgery to remove whatever clots he has in his brain.

Can you give me any advice on how to proceed to do so?

We can't go premium as he is uninsured so we're working on a very limited budget.

We're looking for a good hospital that can take care of him by redoing the diagnostic and removal procedure if needed the whole thing under 2 weeks if possible. I cannot ask for more vacations than this.

Thanks for any advice you might have.

Dear OP,

Sorry to hear about your father's situation.

You probably need to take action sooner than later to ensure good outcome. I presume your father is already in the hospital with a confirmed diagnosis of clot/brain stroke, and probably on anticoagulants already. If not he needs to get to a hospital immediately!

it would probably be most helpful to state your location if you want specific hospital recommendations from other folks here.

I wish him a speedy recovery.

Thanks Flagator.

Sorry to be so succint in my OP. We're in Cambodia. My dad lives in a realtively isolated village. He had a "stroke" about 10 days ago. His left arm and upper body are completely numb as well as his left face. My brother took him to Vietnam and they scan his brain and it showed something inside of it. They gave him some medicine to take but i havent checked whether it was anticoagulant. I told him to take aspirine as well.

As i am not completely trsutworhty of Vietnamese doctors I was thinking about taking him to Thailand where I would be more comfortable with.

So here's the backstory for this call for help. As you can guess i am pretty much in the panicky mode ...

Any advice are really appreciated.

Thanks

If there is consideration of surgery, he should not be taking aspirin!!!

Surgery is not usually indicated for a stroke due to a clot.

Did he have any sort of head injury before this happened? This could cause bleeding around the outside of the brain and the resulting pressure could cause stroke-like symptoms. In that case they would need to drill a small hole into his skull and evacuate the accumulated blood. Could this be what it is? If so, speed is of the essence and it would be ill-advised to try to bring him to Thailand.

Alternatively, he might have a brain tumor.

With any of the above, you would risk something by delaying treatment and costs in Thailand are going to be very high, probably more than US $10,000 even at a non-profit hospital.

If what needs to be done is to drill a hole into the scalp and evacuate accumulated blood then I would urge you let them do it in Viet Nam, the sooner the better. It is a simple procedure and delays are very dangerous.

If it is a tumor that is more complicated, need to consider the overall prognosis.

Is it possible for you to get a copy of the report of the scan in Viet Nam to post? And which hospital is he in, in Viet Nam? Ch Ray is good, as good as in Thailand and less costly.
