BANGKOK: -- Fugitive Indian car bomb suspect Jagtar Singh Tara may still be taking refuge in Thailand after arriving through Suvarnabhumi Airport in September, acting Immigration commissioner Sakda Chuenpakdee said on Tuesday.

The fugitive, a suspect in the assassination of former Punjab chief minister, Beant Singh, entered the Kingdom on a tourist visa, Sakda said.

He claimed that Thailand had learnt of Tara’s presence in Thailand before India asked for assistance in locating him. A helper had already left the Kingdom, Sakda said.

Tara, according to Sakda, had said on his arrival card that he was in Thailand for tourism purposes.

Police had already visited his residence in the Lat Krabang area but could not find him.

Security authorities in the southern border provinces have been ordered to boost safety measures including screening people entering and exiting the border.

Sakda added that the authorities would strengthen patrols along natural borders.

Thai authorities have beefed up security at Narathiwat’s Sungai Kolok border checkpoint for fear that Tara is laying low in Thailand.

An informed source said yesterday that authorities believed Tara was now heading for Malaysia.

Photos of Tara have already been distributed to border authorities and posted at the border checkpoints, Sakda said.

The fugitive who tunnelled out of a maximumsecurity prison in India, has reportedly been lying low in the southern border area.

Indeed the quote above clearly demonstrates the inefficiency of the Indian authorities in not notifying the regions countries vis a vis the situation concerning their interest in the fugitive.

We also clearly see that the Thai authorities did sweet nothing concerning the fugitive who it seems they knew about.

The helper who has since left the country? , Perchance the fugitive himself?

Immigration thought thailand are a disgrace, I arrived at swampy after a 14 hour flight to be screamed at because I simply asked when does my 90 day reporting have to be made (first time I have entered on a re-entry permit) (no date stamp on the stamp in) (and it was on the fast track counters)

pathetic parasites

If he really tunnelled out of a maximum security prison, assuming money didn't talk, then rest assured he's living in a house 20ft under and will be very difficult to find, unless he's on kidney dialysis - even then it won't be easy. Could always 'smoke him out'... might take a few years though... giggle.gif

BANGKOK, Oct 28 -- Interpol has asked the Thai police to watch out for an Indian suspect who fled an Indian prison and may escape through Thailand.

Pol Lt Gen Prawuthi Thawornsiri, spokesman of the Royal Thai Police Office, said Interpol informed the Thai authrities that Jaktar Singh Tara, possibly involved with terrorism, had escaped from an Indian prison and may havey has gone to Southeast Asia. The information was sent to all concerned countries.

The spokesman quoted Interpol as reporting that the suspect might escape through southern Thailand. Local police were ordered to carefully watch out for the man.

Col Banpot Poolpien, spokesman of the Internal Security Operations Command, said Jaktar Singh Tara was a culprit in a murder case in India in 1996 and had escaped from jail in 2004.

There were reports that he fled to many Asian nations, including Thailand.

Authorities in a number of countries including Thailand had been seeking the man but his whereabouts were still unknown, Col Banpoy saidhe said.

“The news is old. I don’t know why it is reported now. Information shows that Jaktar Singh Tara is not a bomb expert and has no links with any incident in southern provinces of Thailand. The case happened 10 years ago in India and there has not been any clear information that he escaped to Thailand. The authorities simply made assumptions but the case has been followed up and coordinated among concerned countries,” Col Banpot said. (MCOT online news)

My bet is that he slipped into Malaysia from Thailand (not that difficult) and blending in where there is a large desi community, probably Penang.

A shave and a haircut and a false identity.

My guess is there is not much sympathy for Sikhs in the desi community these days, even the Hindus are still holding a grudge for them killing Indira. Probably plenty who would rat him out for the price of a Coca Cola.

CAR-BOMB SUSPECT
Indian fugitive 'may not be in Thailand'

But Immigration chief says suspect did enter

BANGKOK: -- INVESTIGATION into the whereabouts of fugitive Indian car-bomb suspect, who escaped from a maximum-security jail in India in 2004, found no evidence that he had entered Thailand, Army chief General Udomdej Sitabutr said yesterday.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, meanwhile, said he did not know if the suspect was on Thai soil and would wait for police reports on the subject.

Udomdej, meanwhile, said he had assigned authorities concerned to closely monitor and strengthen safety measures in the southern border provinces, including an increase in the screening and searching of people and vehicles entering and leaving the country.

The Army chief was responding to reports that Jagtar Singh Tara, a suspect in the 1995 assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, who escaped prison the same year he was arrested, may be taking refuge in Thailand.

Reports have claimed that an Indian government representative had met the Thai side seeking assistance in locating the fugitive, who is believed to be making his way to Malaysia via a southern border province.

The Indian Embassy in Bangkok, meanwhile, did not respond to queries from The Nation.

Thai security officials, however, gave conflicting information yesterday about Tara's whereabouts.

Earlier acting Immigration chief Sakda Chuenpakdee said the runaway may be hiding out in the country.

"Tara, the suspect, entered Thailand at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in September on a tourist visa," he said, adding that according to Tara's arrival card, he is in Thailand for tourism purposes.

Conflicting reports

Police say they have already visited the suspect's accommodation in Lat Krabang area, but could not find him.

Sakda went on to say that Thailand had learnt of Tara's presence in Thailand before India asked for assistance in locating him. The fugitive allegedly had a helper while he was in Thailand, but this helper |has already left the country, he said.

In a meeting with authorities concerned, Sakda said that officials at border checkpoints in the South have already been told to boost security measures and tighten immigration rules, as well as closely screen each person entering and leaving the country.

On natural borders, patrols will be increased in order to prevent anybody sneaking in.

Authorities have already beefed up security at Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok border checkpoint.

An informed source confirmed yesterday that authorities believe Tara was heading for Malaysia.

Photographs of the fugitive have already been distributed among border authorities and posted at border checkpoints, Sakda said.

Earlier, Internal Security Operations Command's spokesman Colonel Banpote Punpian said previous investigation into reports did not find that Tara sneaked into Thailand.

"It is just speculation that he may have entered Thailand," he said.

He said the suspect was not a bomb expert and had nothing to do with the insurgency in deep South.

Just prepare a nice curry meal, some papadam, a glass of lassi and he will be running in the hands of the police.

Preparing Indian food will make a specific suspect come running? Can't you just round up his known acquaintances and give them a kiss? The bullet proof Greek torture method will make them spill all their secrets.

...on the other hand....'he has not entered Thailand'.....

No, I read on Bangkok Post that General Prayuth dismissed such claims.

I also read that he said the GT200 bomb detectors worked.

I have to admit we are all taking a leap of faith supporting him like we do. Lucky for him the ones he booted out were as disgraceful as public servants can get so our choice was easy.
