Something good to say about the police; really

last night in bkk at a busy intersection numerous taxis were refusing passengers by thai and non thai. they'd stop and listen to the destination and just leave or ask for a ridiculous fare.

2 cops on a motorbike pulled up to set up their standard checkpoint. with a fresh taxi stopped right next to them i opened the front door and told him destinattion, he said no. i then reiterated loudly (all in thai) you dont want to go?

one cop witnessed this and bent down to ask the taxi my same question.

suddenly the taxi driver became very accommodating and smiling and said yes. i shook the cops hand.

We had the same situation one day, in front of Bayoke sky tower. The hotel staff told him to take us because he had locked his doors. He took us, then refused to use the metre. We told him to use it then he started racing like there is no tomorrow and hoped we would jump out.

Well at least the police do something, finally.

Interesting post, you got a taxi last night.

I took 4 taxis yesterday and will probably use another 4 today, and no police will be involved.

But who in their right mind would want to use a taxi that's taking you under sufferance and then get the reaction that you did from the driver?

Ask that American guy how it went when he requested a taxi driver do something he didn't agree with.

Oh wait. You can't. He was machete'd to death.

I'm not getting into a taxi where the driver doesn't want me in his taxi. 'Cause the first corner we turn, the cops can't see us any more...

Dude as you can read it was us who wanted that. And it ain't strange to take a taxi who is waiting in front of a huge hotel whatever you might think of it.

The problem was my wife is Thai so he couldn't cheat me that's why he locked the doors of the taxi.

That hotel has a guard who helps guests into taxi's and he finally told the driver to open the doors and take us or he wouldn't be allowed to wait in front of their door anymore. Got it?

The point of the story seems to have been lost amid some petty squabbling. Police intervened on behalf of the public! This is a major breakthrough! A one-off but a step in the right direction. Now if he had fined the cabdriver 1000 baht, that would be a major story.

I would not worry about that, apart from making sure he does not reach for a weapon, you are in a very enclosed space, one on one with a Thai, why would you worry about that?

You mean the american guy that threw his coffee in the taxi drivers face? A little bit different from your story.

If someone threw coffee in my face, which im assuming was hot, I would beat the piss out of them, perhaps not with a machete though.

Stories are told by the survivor, not the guy who died.

And so where'd did you get your side of the story from exactly?

Youtube, NBC, ABC, CNN, Reuters and about a dozen others. Even watched the video.

Over a $1.60 fare. I seem to recall the cup of coffee came up pretty late in the game, only when the guy was looking for an excuse (any excuse) for his inexcusable behavior.
