NARATHIWAT: -- AFTER HER husband was shot dead in the strife-torn far South in 2006, Sudaporn Tangjai worked hard to raise two children - a daughter now 20 and a son, 14.

But on Sunday she suffered a second blow. Her daughter Suthida, a university student, was shot by suspected insurgents in Narathiwat and her life is now hanging by a thread.

"I never thought that the violence would repeat itself after our family head Prasan Tangjai was killed in the attack in 2006," she said.

After losing the family breadwinner, she had to leave home to do odd jobs in Surat Thani and send money back to the kids so they could get an education and a better chance in life.

"I was worried so I told them to come with me to Surat but they resisted, saying our home is here and we don't know what to do for a living (there) because we're not rich.

"My children feel attached to our Narathiwat home and want to remain here. We thought that [violence] wouldn't happen to us because we're just common villagers," she said.

"When I heard over the phone that my daughter was shot, it all came back to me. The pain of losing my husband was so overwhelming I couldn't speak. I heard from the other end that she was seriously hurt. All I could feel was despair like before.

"Every minute I spent on the bus to see my child's face was torture," she said before bursting into tears.

Spending all day watching her daughter in a coma in an intensive care unit, Sudaporn said she hopes Suthida would wake up, but doctors have said to prepare for the worst.

"We used to talk every evening via Line video. Although we live apart we are very close. I just want to watch over her while she's still breathing until she can't fight anymore," she said.

Not surprisingly, Sudaporn now wants to move her son out of the region to a safer place.

Suthida, a sophomore at Princess of Naradhiwas University, was shot in the back of her head while she and three friends rode two motorcycles in Muang district.

I don't think religion matters down there... Since when has someone's religion got in the way of a radicalized insurgent intent on murder? You just need to look at the middle east.

I would say that of all the people murdered by Islamic fundamentalists across the world well over 90% are other muslims.

I don't think religion matters down there... Since when has someone's religion got in the way of a radicalized insurgent intent on murder? You just need to look at the middle east.

Posted as some TV posters seem to think it's only Buddhists being murdered in the deep South, whereas the majority murdered are local Thai Muslims.

I admit I'm largely ignorant about Islam in Thailand, what sort of Islam do the Thai Muslims practice, are they Sunni or Shiite and could this have any bearing on attacks by Muslims on other Muslims?

Young Thai muslims are being sent to arab countries like Saudia and Yemen to study Islam. They are made into fanatical extremists. When they return their hearts and minds are sick with the desert version of Islam which is abhorrent and dangerous. To them a muslim that does not follow the fanatical version of Islam is as much a target as a non muslim. This is a problem that the muslim need to realise and stop it.

From Thai official figures 99% Sunni. Personally I have not heard of Islamic sectarian motivated attacks in Thailand.

There are not adequate words to express my anger at these morons is South Thailand...it will not come to an end without a concerted effort to eradicate the cowards from the face of the earth...take no prisoners...hit them in their sleep...cut their balls off...
