North Korea delegates won’t attend ASEAN Summit

BANGKOK: -- North Korean representatives will not be attending the 25th Asean Summit in Naypyidaw this week, according to the Ministry of Information, The Irrawaddy reported.

Most heads of state from the 27-member Asean Regional Forum will attend the summit, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South Korean President Park Geun-hye, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Barack Obama.

In the most recent official meeting of the Asean Regional Forum, held in Naypyidaw in August, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong and other delegates were in attendance alongside foreign ministry representation from the other 26 members of the forum.

“As indicated by the schedule, the North Korean representatives won’t come to this summit,” Myo Myint Thaung, the chief editor of Myanmar News Agency at the Ministry of Information, told the Irrawaddy on Monday. He said the ministry had no indication as to why North Korea will not send a delegation.

Myanmar and North Korean have had a cordial relationship since the closing years of the military government era. The two countries agreed to resume formal diplomatic ties in 2007.

Previously, relations with the reclusive state had been severed after a 1983 assassination attempt conducted in Rangoon by North Korean agents killed 21 people, including four South Korean cabinet ministers.

They must be upset that Thailand glorious leader has a higher approval rating than their glorious leader.

They must be upset that Thailand glorious leader has a higher approval rating than their glorious leader.

Thailand glorious leader approval rate is only 98%, North Korea glorious leader approval rate is 100%

I guess N Korea couldn't find any volunteers to go on the trip, knowing that upon return you'll have to spend 3 weeks in quarantine for fear of Ebola.

Is attendance of the Asean Summit by invitation?

If 'yes' - who invited North Korea?

If 'no' - what are we talking about here?

So sad you can't make it. Maybe in the next evolutionary era we'll see you once you grow up.

NK are not part of ASEAN but are a member of the ASEAN Regional Forum.

Correct. There are only 10 members in ASEAN, which will take place at the end of 2015, and North Korea is certainly not one of them

No doubt they will be sorely missed.

The happiest, richest, most forward country with the greatest leader of all time must have so many wonderful ideas they could pass on to all the other world leaders who are attending.

Sorry wrong page, that should be in the jokes section.

What a loss, hardly worth carrying on with the summit now

In other words, the World has a misfortune to have this malady whilst ASEAN have a misfortune to have it in the vicinity... Sad...
