Looking for my first windows tablet

Featured Replies

I'm thinking about buying my first Windows tablet and asked in another thread about the Microsoft Surface RT 32GB Tablet but decided it was not for me even though its on sale at a very good price .

I'm really looking for a tablet with a large screen and running Windows 8 if possible and now I have seen the Samsung ATIV Tab 5 for sale at 12,500 Baht ( about as much as I want to pay ) , its seems this was first released in 2013 at around 28,000 Baht .

This tablet seems to get mixed reviews , but the specification for a first time Windows tablet buyer like my self looks fairly decent for the price. The specifications includes a 3G SIM , Micro SD card slot , S-Pen , front and back cameras + flash , front facing speakers , Windows 8 ( upgradable to 8.1 )

As I'm not too familiar with Windows tablets any advice or views on this Windows tablet welcome smile.png

The Atom Clover Trail cpu in that Samsung is quite dated and you may find it a little lacking, especially for desktop apps. The next generation Atoms, Bay Trail Z3XXX series and above, are a big step up in performance from this one. I have a Dell Venue Pro 8 with Bay Trail and the performance is quite decent with little to no lag during general use -- web browsing and light office work.

I hardly use the Dell though as I have no patience for Windows in pure tablet form (it does not come with a keyboard). Touch implementation in desktop mode is just not there yet. Desktop apps are as much to blame as the OS -- not many are designed with touch in mind. A digitiser pen helps but it's not enough for me -- I struggle with the virtual keyboard which usually does not automatically appear like in Android. I have a Vaio Duo 13 and although it was designed to be more of a tablet than a laptop, I use it exclusively in laptop mode. My next Windows computer will be a laptop for sure.

Anyway, getting a tablet with an attachable keyboard similar to the Samsung above is a good idea. Just try to get one with an Atom 3XXX series or the more expensive ultra low voltage Core series. Mind you if you mainly use Metro apps, you could probably get away with the Samsung. The price seems a little high for device with an older cpu, but the rest of the hardware looks decent.

No use to you I know, but a big container ship has just docked at Felixstowe and it's full of 10 inch Windows 8 tablets branded Linx 10 tablet. Flying off the shelves here at £159 GBP and then get £50 GBP cash back a month later. I have one and they are really good.

The £50 cash back seems to be if you part ex an old tablet. Also the screen resolution on the 10" is a bit low.. how are you finding that?

Yes sorry, its a trade in deal. I have an old generic chinlish tablet to trade in so I get the £50 I hope. To be honest for a light user it's really a clean tablet and syncs with your desktop. Though as its Windows it lacks Apps but ok for surfing, Youtube etc. I might start to use Win 8 more now!

NO windows RT, it almost kills Microsoft !

you may consider a basic Surface Pro 3 - i3 version, the screen is excellent, a 12-inch electronic paper. if budget allows, i5 version preferred.

Surface Pro 2 is now on clearance discount too.

cheers

Well ive been checking out more options currently available ( and in my budget of now around 25,000 Baht ) and I do like the look of the Asus Transformer book type models where you can fully remove the screen and use it as a tablet .

The Samsung ATIV Tab 5 , I originally saw on the Thai internet ( Lazada ) for sale at 12, 500 Baht seems to have now disappeared , so ive been looking at alternatives and I saw a post here about the Asus Transformer book TX300 13.3 inch screen priced at 24,900 Baht , the 13.6 inch screen and backlit keyboard are just right for me.
