The Chiang Mai Fencing Club...

... meets today (and every Saturday) at 1:30 at its Fencing Salle inside the "Chiang Mai Chinatown" plaza just where the Superhighway frontage road splits from the main highway, two hundred meters past Wat Ched Yot.

The club is open to everyone; absolute beginner to experienced 3-weapon fencers, men, women, and kids too! It's a great family sport.

If you are a beginner, we'll teach you how to fence. If you are experienced, we'll provide you with some very stiff, but friendly competition.

We have equipment you can use to get started to see if you like the sport. We have plenty of chairs if you just want to sit and watch.

It is an exerting sport that will get you into top physical condition quickly, but you don't need to be an Olympic athlete to play. It's actually more 'mental' than physical, quite like a 'moving chess match' but without the waiting around part!

Good fun, good exercise, good company. What more could anyone ask for on a Saturday afternoon?

(There is a lot of construction going on in front right now, so look for the opening into the parking area)

I used to fence sabre, but not to a very high standard . Back in my day coaches we had access to weren't that great.

Poor coaching really can make or break a club.

Permit me to brag about ours...

To give you some idea of the skills and abilities of our coach, last month six of us played in a very large tournament sponsored by Chulalongkorn University. There were about 250 fencers entered, including members of the Thai National Team and two ex-Olympians. All of the competitors were in their twenties or early thirties... except for our club members. (I'm 68 and others are 67, 62, 52? late 40's and 16) Six of us competed, the last two member for their first time in competition. Four of us made it to the semi-finals. The 16yr old didn't, and the fellow in his late 40's missed the cut by one point! THAT says a lot about our coach! This past June the Royal Thai Navy sponsored a large International tournament in Bangkok. I brought home the Silver medal from that one. THAT says a LOT about our coach! Come join us. We have plenty of equipment you can use.

Right now the other members of the club only fence foil and epee. I'm the only 3-weapon fencer in the club so I really wish you'd come down and play. I haven't fence sabre in quite a while, and really miss it. We had two new people stop by today to give fencing a try, and both were really excited to get involved. As you know, it really is a great sport!

I opened this thread thinking it was a club for buying and selling stolen goods. Very dissapointed. facepalm.gif

That said, I'll swing by and have a try one weekend. Always wanted to try it.

Sorry you were let down. While we are an honest group apropos stolen merch, we will be happy to teach you the 'other' arts of the Highwayman.

Just be sure to wear sports shoes (sneakers, trainers, ) bring a towel, water, and perhaps a change of T-shirts as you will work up a sweat. Short pants are acceptable when getting started in your transformation into a Musketeer.
