Anyone know of a law firm that can handle that? Siam legal says they cannot.

All of the firms I find stateside say they can only handle cases in their area.

Have you contacted the US Embassy in Bangkok? That's where you need to start per SS instructions for people living overseas (contact your nearest Embassy). Make an appointment and go there first. They will advise you what to do next.

I give as much heed to the US Embassy as I do any part of the American government. A grain of salt comes to mind.

I found some info on a veteran's site and the figure I am just f'd.

That money is mine. I paid into the fund. The government in all their wisdom has taken it away. If you think the government works the way it should, you are a moron.

No the U.S. embassy won't be much help to you in Thailand.

The U.S. embassy in Thailand will merely refer you to the Philippines.

The nearest Social Security office that will even hear your complaint is in Manila.

There is no office here in Bangkok, and the standard response you will get here about almost all Social Security questions from the U.S. embassy in Bangkok is that you should take all Social Security questions to the SSA office in the U.S. embassy in Manila.

To be fair, the office in Manila is quite good, and very responsive.

But do not expect any help about a Social Security question from anyone in the U.S. embassy/consulate here in Thailand.

That is from personal experience.

Sorry but SSDI is Social Security Disability Insurance, and like car insurance you don't get it back if you don't have an accident

Really!?!?!?

As I depart this thread, I'd like to point out that only one person, trying to be helpful. Not one of the others answered my question which is par for the course.

Does any one ever read the OP or do they just start replying?

Yes, really

Who Pays for Disability Insurance Benefits?

Workers and employers pay for the DI program with part of their Social Security taxes. Workers and employers each pay a Social Security tax that is 6.2 percent of workers' earnings up to a cap of $117,000 in 2014. The cap is adjusted each year to keep pace with average wages. Of the 6.2 percent, 5.3 percent goes to pay for Social Security retirement and survivor benefits and 0.9 percent pays for disability insurance. The combined tax paid by workers and employers for disability insurance is 1.8 percent of wages, while the combined tax for retirement and survivor benefits is 10.6 percent, for a total of 12.4 percent.

Since you are leaving this forum one more salient point:

If you are interested in applying for benefits, your first step is to file an initial application with the SSA with the help of a qualified disability attorney. Hiring a qualified attorney can increase your chances of successfully obtaining Social Security Disability benefits from the SSA.

Certain states deviate from the normal application process and may require additional information. A local disability attorney will have a good knowledge about the special state disability rules and will be able to help you apply for disability benefits in your state.

Which is the reason that Siam Legal would not assist you

Any luck OP? You do not need a lawyer if you are disabled and have records to prove it.

You can apply online ever with your Thai address. The SS office in Manila will take it from there by collecting your documents and sending them to international ops in Baltimore.

And pray tell where is the OP going to find a Social Security Disability approved doctor to certify his permanent disability in Thailand ?

Yes, you can receive benefits in Thailand but the process must be started in the US. SSDI is different from Social Security retirement and survivor benefits

my advice is to contact a lawyer in the USA. They will help or do just about all the paperwork. I believe you have to show up for an initial and a final hearing. In between it is just a lot of waiting.
