buy new pressure-cooker in Chiang Mai ?

Featured Replies

Happy Holidays, hai Khun,

I'd like to have a pressure-cooker, and wonder if anyone has seen a local emporium with good deals.

thanks, ~o:37;

One CM restaurant owner told me that he buys his in Burma, across the border from Mai Sai. He said they were very cheap (400 baht?) and last at least a few years.

Makro sells one that is reasonable. They are often on Lazada the tefal accucook but at the moment these are out of stock. I bought mine at Central about 10000baht.

Makro does 2 models 850 and 2500 baht we got the 850 baht one does great steak and kidney puddings .(With a little help from my wife)

Only caution I would make is to be certain they are suitible for an induction cooler... Otherwise cold hard lentils and Soy Milk,

A very good point, as most would be made from aluminium.

We bought a few for laboratory use. A British brand "Hawkins" and now made in India.

Saw a microwave pressure cooker in Robinsons for 490baht including some plastic microwave dishes with lids. Appeared to be good quality and would have bought one myself but the instructions were only in Thai.

Meyer is a great brand and have stainless steel (s/s) pressure cookers. Robinsons in Airport Plaza and Central in KSK stock this brand or alternatively there is a Meyer outlet store on Chang Klan Rd.

Currently they (Meyer outlet store) have a sale on and the pressure cookers which were 6500 baht are now just 3490 baht. As mentioned they are stainless steel but have a mild steel encapsulated base, which means they will work with induction cookers. Induction cookers work by magnetic fields and require steel as a base or the wont work.... copper, aluminum and s/s arent magnetic so they dont work with induction. However there is a fair bit of poor quality s/s about and you will find this when it starts to rust.

At least Thailand isnt as bad as the Philippines in that regard. They (The Philippines) have brushed steel with a lacquer finish that they pass off as s/s .

Meyer outlet also have the Japanese designed plastic pressure cookers previously mentioned. Prestige brand but unfortunately I dont have the price of those.

Good luck and happy hunting.... UPDATE: I just checked their website and the sale ends TODAY so you better be quick if you're still interested

Many thanks for all the helpful replies ! Off to see the Meyer brand on sale mentioned today.

Happy New Year.

cheers, ~o:37;

If that doesn't work out, I've seen Tefal pressure cookers - electric and non-electric at Robinson's for 30 percent off. I hope this is because you can enjoy food again and not because you need to be sterilizing something.

I am just glad to see him back on...I haven't seen him for a while. It may not be a good thing to be able to taste if you drink that soy milk stuff.

High-quality units (made in UK?) at very reasonable prices, far under 10K, at Index Living Mall.

My mother had a fear of pressure cookers and was convinced they would blow up at some point, so we never had one.

Of course that fear was transferred to me and it really has never left me, though I've never heard of one blowing up and I have friends that use them.

They seem like a really useful cook-ware item, but I guess I'll go through life without one. sad.png
