NLA to hear statements on impeachment cases
The Sunday Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is to convene early next month to hear statements from relevant parties before deciding whether to impeach former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, former House speaker Somsak Kiartsuranont and former Senate speaker Nikom Wairatpanit in separate cases.

NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai has called a meeting of the assembly on January 8 to hear statements from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and from Somsak and Nikom in the case, which accuses them of abusing their authority while serving as Parliament president and deputy president, respectively.

On January 9, the NLA is scheduled to hear statements from the NACC and Yingluck in a case in which the ex-premier is accused of dereliction of duty in connection with her government's corruption-plagued rice price-pledging scheme.

Do not understand how anyone can be "impeached" once they are out of office? The usual purpose of impeachment is to remove an office holder from their officeial position in the gov't. However, once they are already out of office, what purpose does impeachment serve other than putting on a side-show?

Impeachment allows the legal follow up of charging for negligence, corruption, or other 'crimes'. Without impeachment there is no charge, at least not from the government watchdogs. IMHO.

If she is impeached, according to the abolished 2007 Constitution she will be banned from holding public office for five years. This would be desirable by any political faction that might otherwise be unable to successfully oppose her in an election. If she were also to be criminally convicted, she could be permanently banned from public office.

It is also easier to do than in court.
