NLA to consider proposal on 'morality' panel

BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will meet on Tuesday to consider whether it should endorse the proposal for establishing a "National Confederation of Morality" to help push for concrete results on national reform.

The so-called confederation would be responsible for setting standards, ethics and good governance of public figures and state agencies. If established, the agency will also collect personal information of candidates and check their records before elections. It will have 55 members from the public, private and civic sectors.

If the NLA agrees with the plan to set up the agency, Cabinet approval will be required to issue a relevant law.

Why do I also think that guidelines on what qualifies as disrespect for this institution will be vague, and that the ultimate judge on the issue will be an unelected person who is above the law?

Here you have an unelected "legislative" body fully appointed by the Junta with 52% of the membership being military officers making decisions for all Thais as to the degree that freedom of speech will be allowed. We don't need a committee in America because the opposition will dig up any dirt they can find on any candidate they are running against. Will politicians ever be"moral?" That is unlikely. Moral people are not motivated to enter politics.
