Parking violations ignored on Soi Post Office

PATTAYA--Anyone visiting Pattaya’s downtown post office knows parking is a real problem - and an avoidable one, as it turns out.

A stroll down Soi 13/2 - Soi Post Office as its colloquially known - on Dec. 23 found that the 8-meter-wide road was narrowed by almost half by parked cars and shop owners who illegally blocked off parking in front of their shops.

Neither Pattaya police nor city municipal officers have made any real effort to regulate parking on the street....because they control every square centimeter and are renting the space to these people.

It's sometimes amazing to contemplate the control people seem to think the police exercise over every square inch of Pattaya, as well as the grip they allegedly have on every business. The Costra Nostra at their zenith in Sicily would pale in comparison to the imagined police network of control in Pattaya.

Certainly the police in Pattaya (or in every other city in the world) do enforce laws selectively and sometimes to their profit, but their ability to micro-manage every minor aspect of life in Pattaya couldn't be as all-encompassing as the fairytales emanating from the farang fantasy factory.

The only time I argued with a shop-owner about parking in front of his shop, I ended up with a nail in my tire. This was Pattaya 2nd road.

Soi Post Office has been this way for the last 30 years. What's the big problem all of a sudden?
