Nikon D5500 Unveiled

After weeks of leaked details and photos, the Nikon D5500 was finally made official today. It’s an entry-level replacement to the D5300,

and is the company’s first DSLR to feature a full-fledged touchscreen LCD on the back.

The screen is a 3.2-inch, 1.037-million-dot vari-angle touch LCD display that gives photographers more flexibility in capturing different

perspectives. You can choose focus points by tapping, pinch the screen to check your focus, and even trigger the shutter by touching the screen.

A new Function (Fn) touch feature also gives you access to camera settings such as AF points, aperture, ISO, autofocus mode, and more.

Inside the D5500 is a DX-format 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor that leaves out an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve higher sharpness

and tonal richness — perhaps at the expense of having more moiré. The sensor’s ISO ranges from 100 to 25,600

Nikon is touting the D5500 as one of its smallest DSLRs ever. It measures just 4.9×3.8×2.8-inches and weighs just 14.8oz. It’s an “ideal DSLR

for users constantly on-the-go,” the company says.

Other features of the D5500 include built-in Wi-Fi, 5FPS continuous shooting, 39 AF points with 9 cross-type sensors, 1080/60p video recording

with full time AF and stereo sound, and a “flat” picture profile for footage.

The D5500 will be available starting in February 2015 in black and red. It’ll cost $900 for the body only, or $1,000 when paired with a 18-55mm kit

lens and $1,200 when purchased with a 18-140mm.
