BANGKOK: -- POLICE HAVE VOWED to arrest two suspects in the alleged embezzlement of Bt1.5 billion from King Mongkut's Institute for Technology Lat Krabang (KMITL) if they fail to surrender.

The suspects, Tawatchai Yimcharoen and Sompong Sahaporn-udomkarn, contacted police to arrange their surrenders but failed to show.

"If they don't turn themselves in, we will go after them and make arrests," Pol Colonel Nos Svettalekha, Crime Suppression Division (CSD) deputy commander, said yesterday in his capacity as the lead investigator in the case.

He said police had been tipped off as to their whereabouts.

The scandal involves several suspects, including KMITL officials. Most identified suspects have either come forward or been arrested.

Along with Tawatchai and Sompong, Kittisak Matthujad is wanted by police. He has reportedly fled overseas, and police want his passport revoked.

"We have contacted the Foreign Affairs Ministry to arrange ||the revocation," said CSD deputy commander Colonel Kornchai Klaikleung, who is also working on the case. Meanwhile, Nos said his team had discovered that Bt5.5 million from KMITL had been suspiciously channelled to one of its lecturers.

"If the lecturer fails to explain how the money got into his personal account, then we will have to take legal action against him," he said.

He said he would also ask Siam Commercial Bank to provide further details about Songklod Sriprasong, a former SCB branch manager who allegedly played a big role in the scandal.

According to Nos, the SCB told Songklod to leave the bank after detecting his irregularities.

Arrest if they fail to surrender ! It would be hysterical if it wasn't so serious and unfortunately far too common practice.

Why give them the chance to surrender, why not just get on with it and make an arrest without all the fanfare and DELAY ?

What's the next headline, the suspects have fled the country but the BIB know where they are and will spare no effort to bring them back ?

What's the motto of the RTP ?

" We'll Get Around To It " with the option to use Sometime or Maybe ?

A promise to arrest is not the same as plainly arresting somebody. It leaves options open.

The TP has sworn to uphold the law, nothing more nothing less. They are not the lawmakers nor will they ever be. No place for promises.
