BANGKOK, Jan 19 -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) would fluctuate this year due to external factors, according to SET President Kesara Manchusree.

She said that foreign stock exchanges were highly volatile and would influence the SET.

Switzerland's National Bank floated the Swiss franc and caused fluctuation in money markets worldwide, including those in Asia and Thailand, she said.

Besides, the European Central Bank is likely to increase its quantitative easing measure. That would raise liquidity and create positive effects in worldwide stock exchanges including the SET, Mrs Kesara said.

Suchai Sutasthumkul, chief executive officer of the CIMB Thai bank, said the SET index should rise by 10-15 per cent this year due to and ongoing economic recovery and lower oil prices. People would spend more and the Thai economy would expand by 4 per cent, he said. However, he noted that the government had not pushed fully for its economic stimulus policies.

Mr Suchai also commented that economic slowdowns continued in China, Japan and Europe and only the economy of the United States was growing healthily.

As a result, he said, the global economy would not recover fully.

He expects satisfactory growth in export and commercial banks’ business thanks to local and international economic recovery. (MCOT online news)
