Today my adopted 10 year old daughter came home from school and said she has been told to get her hair cut into a hideous bob or she will not be aloud to participate in anymore interschool competitions. These competitions are enjoyed by all who are entered into them, computer skills, drawing, maths etc,so as you can imagine she came home quite upset.

Is there a law known by all you teachers who read this forum or legal bods that states she has to have short hair or is it just the head teacher at this school.

My wife and I are going to see her next Monday so having information to discuss this with her will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I should just add that we are in a rural location and she is in a small rural school.

Students at government schools were required to have strict haircuts until about a year ago. Girls had to cut it level with their ears and the boys got a buzz cut.

These rules were changed in the last year or two, though children are still supposed to have fairly neat and well-groomed hair.

Having said that, schools directors have authority that would be undreamed of in the west and your school's director may have just decided that they will use the old rules.

Wife tells me that only government school have the short hair rule now. Private schools do not.

My 10 year old has hair down to her waist and goes to some of the interschool competitions with no problem.

Obviously the hair should be neat and tidy.

And answer me this what does your adopted daughter think about getting her hair cut ? I stand to be corrected but this appears to be more of an issue with you, as if you ride in a as a shining knight in white armour righting wrongs you might in fact be doing more damage

You are so lucky she didn't get it cut by the teacher like they do on occasion, and have done to ours.

It is a ridiculous situation, but we are remote and have zero options.

My daughter dreams of having long hair some day.

Tell the school your kids education is far more important than their stupid haircut rules. Give em the finger and teach the kid yourself so it doesnt grow up to "look" good with an empty shell like head as this is what the "so called" education system here is producing, pwetty kids that no f88k all.

We live in a remote area , and the teachers tell the kids to get their hair cut , if not the teachers do it for them.

Growing up one needs to put in much effort and sacrifice to excel become a successful member of society. Wearing a uniform and getting a uniform haircut at 10 years of age is no big deal.

First paragraph, last sentence..'she came home quite upset.'

Sounds as though it's an issue for her too.

Thai schooldren often get infected with nits. One infested child within a week can infect a whole class. Having short hair it is much easier to comb out the nits and their eggs or get rid of them using insectidal shampoo.

Thankyou for all your answers. It isn't my issue although I want her to grow her own identity as I mentioned earlier. Secondly I go all the time to discuss the children's education and was good friends with the previous director of this school.

Interesting post by otherstuff1957 about rules changing and this will be the direction I will be following. The previous director aloud the girls to express thdmselvesvwith their hair length. This director has stepped in while a new permanent one is sourced and she is know around the region for being a bit of a bully towards the children standing in the sun to attention while she walks around under an umbrella spouting rules and next day directions at the kids, sweltering in the sun.

While I am all for a child developing their own identity, defiance in school is not something I would promote.

In my opinion, taking a child’s position against that of their teacher’s is generally not in the best interest of the child.

First it’s the hair, then it’s the uniform, then the skirt up over (or trousers down around) their ass.

A kids feeling is hurt because she has to cut her hair. And the parent is offended.

Bad parenting to the ninth degree.

What next teen-age girl refuse to wear school madated wearing of bras......hahaha!

Heres a novel idea. Esan kids need a gargantuan dose of discipline!

It starts with the hair. Then little girls start focusing on their boobies. Is that what you want?

Hair and boobs are great but you cant fall back on them. Like my parents said you can always fall back on your education.

I pushed a senior Thai issue on this a few years back, eventually she admitted it was because she was worried if girls didn't get their hair cut, they'd be raped or older men would have difficulty identifying them as children.

The law for girls at school to have short hair was relaxed about a year later, in all schools. However, government schools are often run by people with larger egos than their brains can manage, and they are therefore well above any laws set from above.

A sad country makes them cut their hair for fear of being raped rather than castrate all rapists.

So if you cut there hair they won't grow boobs?

And yes you can fall back on your hair but you have to fall forward on your boobs.

Every morning the kids have to stand outside and listen to the head master , and then they sing the national anthem.

Before this happens there are children sweeping the school yard and picking up litter.

As for "eventually she admitted it was because she was worried if girls didn't get their hair cut, they'd be raped or older men would have difficulty identifying them as children.", maybe one persons ill-informed opnion.

What a totally irrational thing to say.

And that folks, wraps the question up for me.

Head Lice transfer mainly from child to child by their hair touching.

Shorter hair lessens the probability of this happenning.

I've watched the SiL comb for maybe 20 mins a night when they were visiting, combing the Nits out of her daughters hair.

If you think your child's individuality will be compromised because her health is being taken care of, maybe time to re-think your priorities.
