I have told my daughter more than once not to fully accept everything her teacher tells her. This is because her teachers, although well meaning, are often ignorant and misinformed. My duty to my daughter is to teach her when to conform and when to resist. She will become an individual not a robot.

Willy, I stand by what I say, maybe I put things a bit strongly, I have gone through my life without any criminal convictions, and have obeyed most laws, there is common sense involved here too, and I have never, and would never do anything that has a negative effect on the ordinary people.

I will give you an example, though I can only refer to the UK here. Do you honestly believe that any self employed person pays the correct amount of income tax on their earnings? The very people who make the laws are breaking them all the time, what is for the goose is for the gander, if you are a working class person from the UK, you will know what I mean.

As for my school, I had a normal education and left school at sixteen, I had respect for most teachers, but there were also a minority I did not have respect for.

Interesting..

I honestly believe that honest people pay their taxes, all of their taxes.

It seems you did not respect your teachers and school enough to finish your education.

Thanks, now I understand your attitude a little better.

Willy, sixteen is the age in the UK when you finish school, some people go on the further education, college, university, and some don't.

You first sentence, the people who run the country are not honest, so why should we be? You are obviously not from the UK, do you know about MPs and their "expenses"? Do you know that a big percentage of them have jobs on the side, ie lawyers, company directors etc etc, while still drawing their full MPs salary? Is that being honest? I would say that is cheating the taxpayers who pay their wages.

I know this topic is not about UK MPs, but I'm just giving you an example. I respect your opinions and am enjoying this debate.

I pushed a senior Thai issue on this a few years back, eventually she admitted it was because she was worried if girls didn't get their hair cut, they'd be raped or older men would have difficulty identifying them as children.

Maybe they should be more concerned about someone raping the boys.

Okay. So what's it about then? Grooming girls for a life in the military? Many of my Thai friends with children will freely admit as a parent you do what you can to keep your daughter away from boys and sex. Are you aware that some school teachers are instructed to call the parents if they see a girl holding hands with a boy? Granted, this is a bit of a conservative view in modern TH, but it's the one that seems to prevail.

It's about hair and a school directors ineptitude to beable to instill her personal preferences regarding this subject upon the pupils in her school without verbally threatening them. It is not about sex in Isaan or any other Thai region. It isn't about army grooming or any other deviation. Just me asking for intelligent opinions or first hand knowledge.

Well, sorry to say mate, but that's the answer I've always gotten from Thai teachers. "They're too young to be looking like women." In theory, it's a reflection of local values. Kinda like the old "You're not going out dressed like that!" back home, only more conservative.

OK, to remark on the subject, I think you are wrong, and that you are making whatever she may be feeling worse by making a fuss. As long as the rule applies to all the girls in the school it's no big deal, and when she gets old enough, she can do whatever she likes with her hair, which will grow.

Frankly, at 10 years old, she shouldn't be even worrying about her hair length, or how she looks.

BTW I have lived with a step daughter, and the whole hair thing ( when she got older than 10 ), so I do have some knowledge of what is involved.

So, have you had the meeting with the School Head or their representative?

If I missed it, apologies, I did read back through your postings, but didn't see a reply.

obviously you have never heard of an apprenticeship, you know, the people that learn a trade and do all the work on your house/ buildings etc. I finished year 10 with pretty high marks but wanted to do an apprenticeship in the building trade as I enjoyed using my hands, starting age at that time was end of year 9 or10 for either 4 or 5 years. I suppose you look down on tradies even though most get better money than those that stayed at school and a hell of a lot more than any teacher does. Suggest you think about that before trying to belittle people for being tradesmen etc.

Like other posters, I've also been told from thai people in Issan the short hair cuts are to keep the old men and village drunks away from the girls.

Anyway, yes maybe its a bit strict, but at least everyone looks the same and this already eliminates a lot of teen issues such as jealousy or envy.

Not you possum, actually I was replying after willy wrote this "It seems you did not respect your teachers and school enough to finish your education.

Seems he thinks anyone leaving school before year 12 does so because they dont respect the teachers etc and have a bad attitude, pity he doesnt realize a tradie makes a lot more than some half baked teacher as well as a lot of others that have finished year 12 and uni. Guess the mugshot really does suit him with that kind of attitude

Thankyou asia2000 we are pleased and I am sure the girls atb the school will be once they find out.

So the child has learned the lesson that if there are any "rules" she does not like , you will come along and change them for her. Good luck to her in later life with that.

Also, you'd better hope she doesn't come up with a lot of other rules she doesn't like, or you're going to be a busy busy busy chap.

Just think, if I had a father like you, I could have got him to change the rule on corporal punishment at school, and doing homework and all that inconvenient stuff.

Not sure about the girls, but I often see the results of the local boys that don't have regulation hair.

The local high school doesn't give them hair cuts like some schools do. Instead they take a hair trimmer and shave a big line across their head. Then the students have to walk around the rest of the day with part of their head shaved, and the rest of it long.

I think it's ridiculous they do this to students, I'd love to see a student who just decided it is a cool fashion statement and kept it like that.

It's a good lesson for children to learn that some rules need to be changed

Other parents DID get the rules on corporal punishment changed. If you haven't noticed, they don't beat children at school in Western countries anymore. My father would have smashed anyone at school that hit me and I'll do the same if someone hits my child.

hard when those commenting are not parents or have their own children by birth. I have 3 daughter(one died) by birth and a step daughter, I have been involved in a couple of untoward moments with school teachers over them, one when my daughter was 7 and had been sick at home for 2 days and the female teacher decided to hit her because she didnt do the homework from the day she was at home, go figure, I went to the school and went ballistic at the teacher involved as well as the headmaster, the teacher was dismissed from the school. The other was when my 13 year old daughter came home from school with strangle marks around her throat caused by a group of senior girls at the school gate because a boy they liked said hello to my daughter. I went to the school and wanted to know why a teacher did not stop them when it happened at the front school gate, their answer was it was outside school property and they didnt want to interfere so again I went to the headmaster and lodged a complaint and the teacher was repremanded and the girls that did it suspended. I will always stand up for my children when they do not do anything wrong but are harrassed due to teacher incompetence, threatening young student and forcibly cutting their hair is assault and I would do the same here and cause as much trouble for them as possible. Until such time as people have their own kids they simply dont understand why a parent that loves their kids stands up for them but again only when they know the child is not in the wrong, it is part of being a parent

No assault in the OP. If I remember rightly threatened not to do some activity unless conform to the rule. I agree that violence is unacceptable, but rules on hair length are acceptable.

I hope the kid doesn't come home with nits, but if she does I hope the OP feels guilty.

BTW I did have a stepdaughter, and would not have complained if there was a school rule on hair length. Far more concerned about trying to make sure she didn't get pregnant while still at school.

When she did eventually grow her hair long, it was such a drama, that I told her if she cut it short again , she would not be allowed to grow it long till she left my house for good.

Posted

in Australia the rules are simple, the teachers can send home any kids with nits and they are not allowed to return to school till they are clean instead of laying it at the feet of those that actually do take care of their hair, most parents check their kids and use the right comb and treatment on them, doesnt take much and having short hair doesnt stop them anyway. If a child takes care of their hair it is fine, this is purely a case of some idiot with a power syndrome that wants everyone to do as they say. If you raise them right they will not get pregnant but here it happens because the teachers dont give a sh*t about them unless it means they can cause pain to the student, there are some sick puppies teaching here

I have 5 children, three of my own and two from my wife's previous marriage. We love the children equally and will stand by them over a teacher any day. I have watched teachers here give out work and then sit texting on their phones while the children look totally bemused by the work handed out. If they put there hands up for attention it went unseen. Eventually they put their hands down and just sat there. The end of lesson bell would Ringland the teacher looked up to see what they were doing and then straight back down to their phone. One of my kids were in that class and yes I had a lot to say to the director about the teachers attitude. As she was due to go off onto maternity leave, they let her go early. Big hearts the Thai's rather than sack her. I want the best for any children but especially mine.

Honestly, this rule is absolutely ridiculous. A hairstyle does not determine a child's intelligence, and I do not believe it will effect intelligence in any way. A math Olympiad competitor from my school did not have a buzz cut. A Carnegie Hall performer from my school had long hair. As seen in these example, it is clear that they achieved their goals through hard work and not what they have on top of their head.
