DUH ... ya think - and hence the reference to the blue diamond in a previous post. If you're not familiar it was the case of stolen gems from Saudi Arabia that were "returned" and proved to be fake

....IT IS GETTING MORE EMBARRASSING EVERY DAY, TO TELL PEOPLE I LIVE IN THAILAND,WHEN ONCE I WAS PROUD...

Some truth in that but where else in the world could guarantee these Monty Python/Black Adder/Goon Show laughs, EVERY SINGLE DAY, without fail, no matter what the colour of the govt?

expert relic hunters helped choose the five particular objects...

The Cambodians are sure that these relics should have been filled with gold and jewels...

The artefacts were formed from sandstone, wood or metal depending on the place and period of time.

About 100 items have been inspected and found to be imitations. There are still more than 10,000 items pending identification and authentication.

The Fine Arts Department estimates that the 50 items proved so far to be originals are valued at about Bt50 million.

Probably the are made in China ... clap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gif

I think if they were made in China they would have been better quality. The Chinese have thousands of years of experience forging antiquities, going back to at least 3,000-4,000 B.C. The story says the Cambodians complained that they weren't even very good fakes.

The Green Emerald Buddha was taken from Laos. Until this day Thailand has not made it known to the public.

Hey you are right. Learn something every day.. Do you think Thailand will

return it ?

"In 1779, the Thai General Chao Phraya Chakri put down an insurrection, captured Vientiane and looted the Emerald Buddha to Siam, taking it with him to Thonburi. "

Why has that not been sensored from the history books.

Are you allowed to post that?

Am I allowed to repost it? ??

This is not correct

Guides at Wat Phra Kaew openly discuss how the Emerald Buddha was a spoil of war from Laos , and probably Cambodia before that - nobody has tried to cover that fact up

I just wonder how much the police commander paid for his fakes? They look good to me and I am sure can be used in hotels and restaurants

as art decoration. thumbsup.gif

Could it at all be possible that someone switch the real statues for these fake ones.

Could it be the Cambodians got the real thing and said they're fake just to zing Thailand?

and beside, who rally know what's fake what's not now days? as even the experts are

fake, everything thing in these countries are fake,,,

A Thai wouldnt do that

Could it at all be possible that someone switch the real statues for these fake ones.

The Khmers should be happy, Thailand gave them new made relics, they will last much longer than the original old ones and after a couple of hundred years it will all be forgotten.

Try to understand that back in the day the various principalities such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai, Wiang Chan (Vientiane) were all competing against one another for hearts and minds. The control or possession of magical artifacts such as the Emerald Buddha enhanced the prestige of the local rulers, thus extending their influence during an era where physical borders were not yet conceived. The best book on the larger subject is Achaan Thongchai's book "Siam Mapped". But yes, the Emerald Buddha was passed around (captured) by several local rulers until it passed to Bangkok early in the then new Rattanakosin era.

The article you linked to says that it was previously in Chiang Mai before being removed to Laos:

However, it's rightful owners may be the Burmese. Supposedly, it was a gift from Sri Lanka to Burma, but the ship it was on was wrecked in Cambodia (not sure, geographically, how that happens!!), then the Thais swiped it from the Cambodians. Then it ends up in Laos before being seized (again) by the Thais. The Lao claim may not be the strongest...

Read the Wikipedia again.

"Legend" has it being made in India in the 1st century and then shipwrecked in Cambodia and stolen by the Thais.

Historians think it more likely made in the 15th century in the Lanna Kingdom, probably in chiang saen.

Hmmm . . . . This gives me pause to think that the Thai lady last night was faking it?

If it was good at the time then why worry. Faking it or not, to us males it's all good.

Could it at all be possible that someone switch the real statues for these fake ones.

No

" Thailand, which has recognized that many of the objects recovered were indeed fake, has said it would return 16 of genuine artifacts with another 20 under consideration. "

From the wording it appears that the Thai people in charge knew they were fake but were trying it on. They used their own experts to choose the best fakes in the hope they wouldn't be detected.

My guess is that it was the CIB guy that got ripped off.

A few years back I was leaving Thailand with one of the fake tourist statues when a custom guard started to declare that I was leaving with an antique.

I don't know if he really thought it might be an artifact or had another motive, but I suspect my loud laughter at the comment threw him off-guard and he let me through.

Wow, fake relics, the next headline we will read. " Police are conned by Fake CIB Chief, the real one is holidaying in Dubai. But not to worry we still have the houses, cars and gold. But wait, there's more. Oh, No, all fake too and the money, counterfeit. Mai Pen Rai."

so there is a collection and deceided to return the ugly / fake ones

It's OK as the Indians really are the traditional owners...

Mystic claims Angkorian temples built in India

In the satsangs, or assemblies, he calls on his followers to “please understand” that the Cambodian temples are far older than the 900 or 1,000 years asserted by “cunning” Western historians, and that many of the temples were not built in the Kingdom at all.

Phnom Penh Post

the Thais swiped it from the Cambodians.

They swiped their entire kingdom.

Did they 'accidentally' return the infamous fake Blue Diamond along with those relics, too? cheesy.gif

I see this: "Cambodian historians recorded the capture of the Buddha statue in their famous Preah Ko/ Preah Keo legend. However, some art historians describe the Emerald Buddha as belonging to the Chiang Saen Style of the 15th century AD, which would mean it is actually of Lannathai origin."

So yours is an over-statement. The wiki also does not provide citations for it's claim re some historians.

"In the land of the blind, the one eyed man..... get's his eye poked out".

Same as every thing in Thailand tte women included

Blue diamonds? Saudi Arabia? Umm comes to,mind???

Was not once most of Laos a part of the Lanna kingdom?

Thailand’s Fine Arts Department said expert relic hunters blah blah blah. Fact of the matter is, Thailand's Fine Arts Department and Thailand itself, for that matter, shot themselves in the foot once again with more stupid foibles.
