Try to understand that back in the day the various principalities such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai, Wiang Chan (Vientiane) were all competing against one another for hearts and minds. The control or possession of magical artifacts such as the Emerald Buddha enhanced the prestige of the local rulers, thus extending their influence during an era where physical borders were not yet conceived. The best book on the larger subject is Achaan Thongchai's book "Siam Mapped". But yes, the Emerald Buddha was passed around (captured) by several local rulers until it passed to Bangkok early in the then new Rattanakosin era.

Supposedly, it was a gift from Sri Lanka to Burma, but the ship it was on was wrecked in Cambodia (not sure, geographically, how that happens!!), then the Thais swiped it from the Cambodians. Then it ends up in Laos before being seized (again) by the Thais. The Lao claim may not be the strongest... Read the Wikipedia again. "Legend" has it being made in India in the 1st century and then shipwrecked in Cambodia and stolen by the Thais. Historians think it more likely made in the 15th century in the Lanna Kingdom, probably in chiang saen.

" From the wording it appears that the Thai people in charge knew they were fake but were trying it on. They used their own experts to choose the best fakes in the hope they wouldn't be detected. My guess is that it was the CIB guy that got ripped off.
January 25, 201511 yr A few years back I was leaving Thailand with one of the fake tourist statues when a custom guard started to declare that I was leaving with an antique. I don't know if he really thought it might be an artifact or had another motive, but I suspect my loud laughter at the comment threw him off-guard and he let me through.

I see this: "Cambodian historians recorded the capture of the Buddha statue in their famous Preah Ko/ Preah Keo legend. However, some art historians describe the Emerald Buddha as belonging to the Chiang Saen Style of the 15th century AD, which would mean it is actually of Lannathai origin." So yours is an over-statement. The wiki also does not provide citations for it's claim re some historians.
