If they'd play a proper programme of interesting pieces in full I might be tempted. But not by the usual cheesy extracts and Disney tunes.

it's free by the way !

I got goosebumps last year when they started with the William Tell overture.

I don't know anyone of my age from the USA that wouldn't be instantly transported back to Saturday morning TV and the Lone Ranger with the first few notes. That alone was worth the trek.

The rest of the evening is just a pleasant bonus, much enjoyed by hundreds of us.

But it's not everyone's cup of tea...

Was amazing ..... The version of Tomorrow sung by a very young kid at the end was really good choice . As I was running loops on the 2.5 kilometer track around the park hearing a live symphony play while sun was setting with many others I just reflected on how amazing this park is . [emoji295]️

"The sun will come out tomorrow

So you got to hang on 'til tomorrow, come what may!

Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love you tomorrow "

You're only a day away

Bump for this Sunday's (January 24) Concert, after a weekend off for the Tourism Festival.

A very pleasant way to spend a Sunday evening in BKK without coughing up a baht... Free. Gratis. Cheap enough for the cheapest Charlie.

Super easy access from MRT Silom or BTS Sala Daeng.

It was the perfect time today to run in the park today , great music and sunset while running on the cities best jogging path . Next Sunday will be the last concert in this series so if you missed today there is always next week .

Actually happened to be in the park for one of three the other week. On a par with maybe an enthusiastic amateur orchestra back home. I wouldn't bother going back.

I, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoy getting out in the park with hundreds of others who seem to also enjoy the music, the company and the evening air.

And every time I do, it confirms my suspicion that Thai folks aren't the uncultured barbarians presented by the TVF crowd, and that there are entire communities of friendly expats and families of locals with loftier aspirations than keeping barstools from gathering dust or blowing away. Quite an eye opener...

It ain't just about the music. That's the catalyst.

If that's the best orchestra they have to offer, I'd say Bangkok hardly has much to recommend it in terms of western culture.

But then why would anyone expect it to?

The musicians who play at the Lumpini Park concerts are indeed members of the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, but not the same musicians that play in the same orchestra at the Thai Cultural Centre.

A recent poster asked whether this particular orchestra was the best that Thailand has to offer. As a regular in the auditorium at the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra concerts at Mahidol University, Salaya I would say that it is not. I am not trying to provoke a discussion of the best venue, best orchestra, best conductor or best acoustics, but only trying to spread the word that there is good music on offer if one takes the trouble to find it.

I was wondering if anyone had seen the Philharmonic - been tempted to go check them out but the location put me off. Are they worth the trek across town?

Rather than a 'trek across town', I regard it as a pleasant afternoon trip to the outer-suburbs. The concert hall is a hidden gem, and the shuttle-bus from Bang-Wa BTS will drop you outside and take you back ten minutes after the end of the concert. Absolutely no walking involved. I have even seen the security guards ask a VIP's Mercedes-Benz chaffeur to park elsewhere as he was using the shuttle-bus pick-up point. But the music is the main thing and I find that it is a little more away from the mainstream than that usually heard at the Thai Cultural Centre.

If any orchestral music lover wishes to go I am quite sure they will not be disappointed.
