Just got back from BKK couldn't believe how many there are now sitting at the roadside street bars.

PS Didn't see any Police hassling people in the 2 weekends I was there around Soi 5, 7 and 11. Only saw Police when having my breakfast inside Robin Hood bar.

I remember speaking to a guy around that area some years ago. I asked him what he was doing there. Importing/Exporting clothing was the answer.

We caught the lift the other night when i was returning from work. I said hello and he asked what I did for work, I asked him and he is a clothes Import/Exporter. Not sure but I think his office must be close to Soi 11 and they are only open evenings.

I live in Asoke and I have seen a few undercover cops arrest some from time to time. Most are selling coke and other stuff.

i have seen a number in hand cuffs when the police do a swoop.

I imagine this is not a petty offense in Thailand right? I hear marijuana possession is equivalent to a felony back home. So possession with intent to distribute – cocaine – that's probably going to take a decade away from your life or even more.

I live near Soi 11 and walk the streets at all hours. These guys never bother me and I'm sure they are harassed and shaken down by the cops more than anyone.

The fact that you made a point of mentioning their "Africanization" speaks volumes about your general perception of black people, to begin with. Now, to answer your question. Why not just smile @ them (to give polite recognition) while continuing to walk along your way. It is vice and it is taxed by the police. That being said soi 3 and soi 11 are full of foreigners who aren't necessarily drug addled whore loving degenerate nihilists - although many are. On a positive I think it is good that it is restricted to the scum-bag red light district. Sure some sex tourists may be bothered by some smirking black people that make them feel scared, but probably the same amount of fear that is felt by a tweaking drug user when he sees some aggressive whore-mongering johns spilling out into the street. It really is a slippery slope.
