It all started when Lady Gaga said she wanted to buy a fake Rolex in Bkk, and the US did not extradite her. This was exacerbated with Rihanna's tweet about a sex show in Phuket. And now this. Enough is enough. It is clear that the US is deliberately tarnishing Thailand's image. It has to stop!

The junta hates "bad words about them". So immature.

They have supplanted democracy, twice, in the last few years...because it didn't agree with them or their sponsors.

They are now trying to force a medieval sense of morality and austerity that has never existed in the history of the kingdom.

The General should run for Pope...he seems to feel himself infallible.

The Thai rulers of the day can throw a fit over Washington's criticism and run into the arms of the Chinese, who will embrace them.

The unelected self-appointed General ruler of Thailand indicated early on...when he took over the running of the Thai government...that he would be spending more time exploring a relationship with the Chinese...

This is nothing new...and may actually be a good thing for Thai commerce and tourism...

The Chinese are after all...their distant relatives and extended family...

This is getting to be like a school yard spat......why can't these childish generals, and many Thais, just accept that what has happened here simply isn't accepted by the global community.....with the exception of Cambodia, North Korea and China...?

I guess each has the liberty to think for themselves.

There are countries bombing and destroying other countries and the 'global community' is deafeningly silent.

Edit

A country has to decide whom it could trust for advice.

Thailand was not criticised nor were the Thai people. Just the *****atorship, the way they took power, the way they treated their opponents, and their plans for the future. In other words the Americans voiced the views the millions of Thais are not allowed to because they cannot vote or demonstrate or speak out. Good old US of A I say. The solution is really easy. Have an election.

Moving away from the US wouldn't make sound economic sense. According to the USTR site, quote "Thailand was the United States’ 19th largest supplier of goods imports in 2013".

Direct investment in Thailand was also substantial at US$16.9bn (2012 figures) which represented a 16.1% increase over the previous year.

But will China be interested in 866 million pairs of shoes? I doubt it somehow.

Thailand is a essentially a supplier nation. As long as foreign companies are willing to invest in new factories to produce goods, Thailand will supply the labour and cheap.

But they're not an innovative nation. You'd think that with their cheap labour and knowledge picked up from making other companies products, they'd be able to design a classy mobile phone. But nobody in Thailand is willing to invest in new technology without being sure of an immediate return.

So the country will largely remain just a supplier of mass produced goods apart from agricultural exports.

No harm in that, but they'll have to learn to swallow criticism and not go sulk like a scolded child if events lead other countries to call their form of democracy into question. They don't have any clout in the world and what Thailand produces can be had elsewhere if things go sour.

The majority of the global community has no real interest in Thailand and many of them would be hard pushed to find it on a world map.

After all why should they care, so many of them have far bigger problems of their own.

Do you hear the USA lambasting the governments of Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya about how they run their countries? The USA have supported the military governments of those countries despite the number of deaths caused by the military governments.

How many innocent civilians have been killed by the Thai government since last May, and how many in just those 6 countries have been killed even just as "collateral damage"?

Thank you for the links. They made very interesting reading.

Had you not published the links I would never have known about them.

Actually I would have thought that some of the posters on this forum, who blow rule #11 out of the water every time they post a comment, would be doing more damage to Thailand than the USA ever did.

Or doesn't anyone take any notice of those toxic anti-Thai musings ??? whistling.gif

If you believe some of the stuff on this thread most of the global community takes notice of the anti Thai musings and cheers each one wildly.

Meanwhile back in the real world most of the global community doesn't care about Thailand. Politicians might if there is something in it for them, but the majority of real people just aren't interested.

Such a lame argument. The writer is basically saying that sure the coups are a bad idea, but look at how bad Thaksin was. Why are the other countries not upset with him?

What they don't seem to understand is, a country needs to have a foundation in order to avoid irreconcilable differences every election cycle. Firstly you need to make laws and hold everyone accountable to them (rule of law). Secondly you need transparency so the people can make informed decisions (media freedom). Thailand's current libel laws are skewed to protect criminals. How can the people know how bad the government is behaving if it is illegal to report bad behavior? And thirdly you need to allow the people to choose and stand by their decision until the next cycle or until the leadership is in breach of the law.

And all three of these things need to be vigorously defended, by the people, through law enforcement and the judicial system. The army should be concerned about external threats. These things should be as important to the people as their national identity and all the things they hold sacred..

Because Thailand cannot grasp the importance of these three things, they are forever in a situation of do-overs, with all the privileged hungry piggys at the trough. And the country looking more ridiculous by the decade.

And none of the issues you raise are being solved by the junta and so the cycle will continue.

There comes a moment where the country chooses to go through with democracy or allow itself to be dragged back to a coup. One day the people will fight back against the coups and go with democracy.

It is inevitable. The red or blue pill and once it happens Thailand will progress very quickly. Until then, the cycle of false democracy will continue.

Ain't that the truth! Paradigm Shift cannot be stopped only sloooowed. As you say it is 'inevitable' but those feudal Lords will kick and scream and try and try and fool the populace they 'do it for Thailand' and some citizens (and some TVF yellow-tinted spectacled fellows) believe them.
