Orient Express train locomotive catches fire but no one was hurt

BANGKOK: -- The locomotive of the Orient Express train which carried about 200 European tourists from Singapore caught fire as it was travelling between Kanchanaburi and Wang Yen railway stations this morning.

Except for the damage done to the front locomotive by the fire, none of the passengers on board were hurt or were they aware of the incident as they were all travelling in airconditioned carriages.

The locomotive caught fire after the train shortly after it left Kanchanaburi station for a distance of about 500 metres. The drivers of the 17-carriage train, Mr Niyom Chuenchom and Mr Pichitsamart Sunthranusorn, saw smokes emanating from the engine room and applied the brake to stop the train. Then, with the help of the other officials, managed to disconnect the troubled locomotive from the rest of the train which was brought back to the station with the other locomotive.

Damage to the locomotive was estimated at about 100 million baht. Electrical short circuit was suspected to be the cause of the fire.

Mr Manit Noisung, manager in charge of tourism trains, said that the Orient Express train arrived in Kanchanaburi at about 10.30 Saturday night from Singapore with about 200 mostly European passengers who spent the night on the train.

The passengers were scheduled to enjoy a raft ride in the Kwai river before they are due to leave for Singapore this evening, he said, adding that the passengers were not panic because they were not aware of the incident.

Absolutely disgraceful. SRT has many later model units they could use to haul this "prestigious" and expensive train.

Rich tourists have paid good money to ride this once in a lifetime train.

"Except for the damage to the front locomotive"? Was there a rear locomotive?.

edit to add: since this was on the Kwai River side trip, they may well have had an engine on each end of the train.

These guys should take a tip from the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada and get some decent power.

But of course, this might all be so much scrap metal when the High Speed Trains Fast Trains start.

Or around $3,000,000 US give or take. Probably a lot more than it is worth as scrap for a 30 year old loco. Might have even been equipped with its own fire extinguishers, but then again, maybe not.

I assume this is an old picture as the serving of alcohol is now prohibited on trains.

This is a privately operated luxury train. Not part of the State Railway of Thailand fleet. It is not bothered by drunks wandering from one car to the next looking for girls to chat up.
